Sheriff’s Department to conduct pedestrian and bicycle safety operation in West Hollywood

On Friday, September 12, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department will conduct a bicycle and pedestrian safety operation in West Hollywood between 5:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. The focus of the operation will be on identifying and addressing dangerous driver behaviors that pose serious risks to people walking and biking in the area.

Drivers can expect increased enforcement for violations including:

  • Speeding

  • Illegal turns

  • Failing to yield to pedestrians and cyclists

  • Ignoring stop signs and traffic signals

According to LASD Sergeant Michael Lennig:

“We all have places to be, and not everyone gets there by car. Bicyclists and pedestrians have the same rights to the road but face even more risk without the protections vehicles provide. We should all be looking out for one another.”

Why It Matters for West Hollywood

West Hollywood is known for being walkable, bike-friendly, and community-oriented—but those features come with shared responsibility. With busy streets like Santa Monica Boulevard, Sunset, and Fairfax often filled with drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians alike, the goal of this operation is to prevent collisions and promote safer behavior from everyone who uses the road.

Safety Reminders from LASD

To help reduce risk and improve traffic safety, the Sheriff’s Department shared the following tips for pedestrians, drivers, and bicyclists:

For Pedestrians:

  • Be predictable. Use crosswalks where available.

  • Stay alert to oncoming vehicles and practice caution when crossing.

  • Avoid stepping into the street suddenly. At 30 mph, a driver needs approximately 90 feet to come to a full stop.

  • Increase your visibility, especially at dawn, dusk, or nighttime. Wear light-colored or reflective clothing and carry a flashlight if walking in the dark.

  • Use extra caution when crossing wide or high-speed streets, particularly at night.

For Drivers:

  • Follow the speed limit and reduce speed at intersections.

  • Always be prepared to yield to pedestrians at both marked and unmarked crosswalks.

  • Do not block crosswalks when waiting to turn.

  • Never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

For Bicyclists:

  • Follow all traffic laws and use proper hand signals.

  • Ride in the same direction as traffic.

  • Use a front white light and rear red reflector when riding at night.

  • Wear a helmet for your safety.

  • Avoid riding too close to parked cars to stay out of the door zone.

  • Use bike lanes when available, unless turning left or avoiding a hazard.

  • Yield to pedestrians in both marked and unmarked crosswalks.

Stay safe, West Hollywood—whether you’re driving, biking, or walking, we all share the responsibility of keeping our streets safe!
