More Candidates Join Race for WeHo Council

The race for two seats on the West Hollywood City Council may get more crowded.

As of the Friday deadline, 11 people had filed the necessary paperwork and 20 signatures needed to enter the race (pending validation of those signatures by the the Los Angeles County Registrar) with the City of West Hollywood.

Three candidates already have made public their intent to compete for seats now held by Mayor Jeffrey Prang and council member John Duran, who are running for re-election. They are Sam Borelli, a communications consultant and West Hollywood public safety commissioner; Christopher Landavazo, a deputy sheriff, and Steve Martin, an attorney and former council member

As of Friday (Dec. 7), Rusty A. Wiggs joined the list of validated candidates.

Wiggs is executive director of Cognitive Behavior Associates, a psychology clinic in Beverly Hills.

Five other candidates have collected the required signatures and will be added to the ballot if they are verified. They are:

Tom Demille, who has run unsuccessfully for a council seat four times and describes himself as a community activisit. Demille’s most recent stance on a city issue came on Nov. 21, when he spoke before a city council meeting to complain that some incumbent council members had been in office too long. However, Demille also proclaimed himself opposed to the council term limits measure that will be on the March 5 ballot.

Nick Garzilli, executive vice president for global development at ET3. Garzilli recently addressed the city council, urging it to back a test in West Hollywood of the “maglev” personal rapid transit system that his company produces. The proposed system would require installation of a closed tube across the city through which capsules carrying riders would rocket. Garzilli claimed the system would enable someone to cross West Hollywood in two minutes.

Matt Ralston, a comedian who has performed at Hollywood Improv. Ralston has recorded a campaign theme song available online.

Todd Michael Schultz also qualified on Friday.
