Nick Garzilli – Candidate Statement

Sustainable Transport Entrepreneur; Council Candidate

Everyone needs transportation. It’s a necessity. I will give WeHo residents an ultra energy efficient transport system to relieve the city’s congestion and save commuters time and money.

Imagine WeHo as the first city in the world to have a privately funded solar powered Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) network. These car sized pods will hang on rails and act like horizontal elevators, just push the button and you are on your way traveling 30-40mph, non-stop, no traffic, no drunk drivers, no oil. Solar panels on top of the rails power the pods and on hot days they feed much needed energy back into the grid, right when it is needed most. PRT is an economic lifeboat that will bring new jobs and revenue to WeHo.

We live in a segregated society. I call it, “Transportation Apartheid”. There are many who can’t afford a car or cannot physically operate one. You are at a distinct economic disadvantage if you don’t have a car in LA. Still, both the wealthy and the poor are stuck in traffic. Traffic is the great equalizer.  We are literally evaporating our money as we sit in traffic, polluting the air we breath, as gas prices continue to go up, and the average person gets squeezed again. With PRT the rich and the poor will travel the same speed, both a lot faster than they are traveling now. Traffic is a local problem with a local solution.

I grew up in Los Angeles and loved visiting the Science Museum and Travel Town as a kid. I graduated from the USC School of Theater in 2002 and became an actor/waiter, but finally at age 28 met my lovely wife Joanna. We now have a three year-old son who is also passionate about transport. I finally found my calling when I learned about technology that could get you from Los Angeles to New York City in 45 minutes. I’ve now dedicated my life to making these technologies become a reality.

I love WeHo because of freedom of expression. What I would bring to WeHo as a City Council member is Freedom of Movement across the City.
