LA Pride 2013: 10 Most Popular Parade Floats

LA Pride 2013 featured more than 130 entries in Sunday’s parade. Here are 10 floats and exhibits that got the biggest cheers from the crowd.

Micky’s Gay Bar

The popular gay bar, known for its go-go dancers, didn’t disappoint with its yearly “flaming fire truck” stocked full of muscle men shaking their stuff. This year, however, there was a surprise on the very back of the fire truck: WeHo Jesus.

WeHo Jesus, aka Kevin Lee Light, said in years past he’s joined the Comedy Store float, but this year they didn’t have a float. So, he showed up at the parade staging area and asked Micky’s folks if he could join them.

WeHo Dodgeball

WeHo Dodgeball made a splash in its first year at LA Pride.

Founder Jake Mason put up $500 of his own money to construct a moving mini-dodgeball court.

“I’m praying it makes it all the way across the route,” said Mason before the parade. “It’s about 40 feet by 20 feet, with a couple people inside playing dodgeball.”

The new dodgeball season starts next week, with Thursday action kicking off June 13 and the Tuesday league starting June 18.

Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps

Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps date back to 1908, when Emanuel Bronner was born to a Jewish family that had been making soap since 1858. In 1929, he brought his formulas to America, and started the current company in 1948. The company prides itself on “eco-friendly” soaps.

Their display Sunday culminated in soap spraying into the crowd as bikini- and swimsuit-clad men and women got their clean on.

Pasadena Scottish Pipes and Drums

An institution in Pasadena, this competitive “Grade 3 Pipe Band,” dedicated to the study and performance of Scottish bagpipe music, thrilled the crowd Sunday.

Gloria Allred

Gloria Allred, the California civil rights lawyer known for taking high-profile and controversial cases, made her case in support of gay marriage by donning a wedding dress.

Recently, Allred took on the case of Jenna Talackova, a Canadian transgender woman who challenged her disqualification from the Miss Universe Canada pageant for not being a “natural born” female. Looking to date someone as beautiful as Miss Talackova check out these transgender dating sites. In April 2013, Allred appeared on RuPaul’s Drag Race.

She has represented everyone from Rachel Uchitel to former Spice Girl Mel B.

The Eagle Gay Bar

Silver Lake’s self-described “premier leather gay bar” brought out the goods for its parade exhibit. First came men clad in leather. Then, a man cracking his whip dangerously close to onlookers. Finally, a litany of motorcycles. The crowd roared for each.

Taking a cue from West Hollywood’s Saddle Ranch, Chipotle featured a float with a woman riding a “mechanical burrito bull.”

Eric Garcetti

The Los Angeles mayor-elect, despite being swamped with transition plans, found time to ride down Santa Monica Boulevard in an electric-blue Jaguar. Trailing Garcetti was a double-decker bus, stocked full of supporters waving rainbow flags.

The Abbey

One of the world’s most famous gay bars exhibited go-go dancers on the hood of a Mini Cooper waving Abbey banners with more go-gos in tow.
