West Hollywood Park is about to get a whole lot sweeter. Jelly beans the size of large boulders are on their way.

West Hollywood, along with artist Cosimo Cavallaro, will soon install three large-scale, brilliantly-hued sculptures designed in the shape of jelly bean candy in West Hollywood Park, 647 N. San Vicente Blvd. between Santa Monica and Melrose. The installation is part of the city’s Art on the Outside program and is titled “Love Your Bean.”

The exhibit will make its home in the park near the Pacific Design Center beginning in September. There will be an opening reception for “Love Your Bean” on Thursday, Sept. 5 between 5:30 and 7 p.m. at the West Hollywood Park.

Cavallaro worked alongside Southern California fabricator Jack Brogan for a year to test a wide variety of materials and methods to refine the surface and intense colors. Brogan’s detailed style had a large impact on the trademark “Finish Fetish” work from 1960s Los Angeles.

Cavallaro, a Los Angeles resident, was born in Montreal in 1961 to Italian immigrants. He spent his childhood attending art schools in both Canada and Italy. After working as an award-winning television commercial film director throughout the ’80s and ’90s, Cavallaro focused his attention back to the visual arts. In 1995 he created a unique body of work from perishables that have been exhibited throughout the United States and abroad, including a Chocolate Jesus and a Twiggy in Cheese.
