The designs will be presented by Frederick Fisher and Partners Architects, LPA, Inc. and Langdon Wilson International, each of which is competing for the contract to redesign the park as part of what is known as “Phase II” of the park’s master plan. The plan calls for demolishing the existing auditorium and park office, restrooms and skyroom; the swimming pool and support building; the “tiny tot” building and that adjacent restroom building. That will permit an expanded and uninterrupted open space with grass and trees. The city plans to build recreational and community facilities and provide parking in a new area at the south end of the park. Those facilities will include a gymnasium and pool along with a playground for children.
The first phase of the park master plan, which has been completed, included creating additional open space and landscaping, building the award-winning West Hollywood Library building, erecting a five-story parking garage, installing a promenade, and adding two outdoor basketball courts and three rooftop tennis courts.
The competing design firms will present three two- by three-foot renderings of a proposed design. The selection committee will pick one architect to provide the design services. The presentation will be at 10 a.m. at the City Council chamber at 625 N. San Vicente Blvd., between Melrose and Santa Monica.
