When It Comes to Neon, West Hollywood Rivals Las Vegas for Flash

rage sign
RAGE, 8911 Santa Monica Blvd. at North San Vicente. Rage’s neon sign is in a formal font (Goudy Old Style?) that contrasts sharply with the name of the place and its bright red color. The inside is festooned with big video monitors, and the crowd is what most of the world thinks of when it thinks of West Hollywood. Absolutely GFTG. Photo by Joshua Barash.

Neon Sign in West Hollywood CA
MICKY’S, 8857 Santa Monica Blvd. at Larrabee. Micky’s is fronted with a vertical neon sign whose design seems very 1950s. Inside it’s all go go boys and the men and boys who love them. Again, very GFTG. Photo by Joshua Barash.

Rainbow and Roxy Sign
THE ROXY, 9009 W Sunset Blvd. east of North Wetherly. The rotating neon R is an attention grabber. But the club where John Belushi partied before his fatal overdose, where Heidi Fleiss hosted parties, and where Pee-Wee Herman got his start, hardly needs a sign given its history.
