It’s official. The party to which you surely won’t get invited is moving to the parking lot on the south side of West Hollywood’s Sunset Plaza.

WEHOville.com reported in November that Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter was considering moving the magazine’s famous Oscar party from the Sunset Tower, where it has been held since 2009. Carter said he was looking for a venue that would accommodate a larger crowd than the 1,000 film industry titans, celebrities and hangers-on that typically attended the Sunset Tower event. The Hollywood Reporter reported today that Carter had confirmed the new location.

While Sunset Tower is known for its sweeping views of the Los Angeles skyline and its clientele of A-list actors, director and producers, the Sunset Plaza parking lot also has impressive views. On the other hand, Sunset Tower has a kitchen and bathrooms. Vanity Fair will likely erect some pretty fabulous tents to accommodate its guests and their needs.

The Vanity Fair Oscar party is the successor to one launched in April 1964 by Irving “Swifty” Lazar and his wife Mary. Lazar’s Oscar event moved from a small dinner at the Bistro in Beverly Hills to a one-time staging Warner LeRoy’s Tavern on the Green in New York City in 1977, eventually settling at Spago in 1985. The party went dark with Lazar’s death in 1993. Steve Tisch and Graydon Carter picked up the reins with a party at Morton’s the next year. When Morton’s closed in 2007 it was moved to the Sunset Tower, whose owner, Jeff Klein, is co-owner with Graydon Carter of New York City’s Monkey Bar.

While I think its great that events like that are here there is little consideration for the effects those late night events have on the neighborhood. For the naysayers that think sound does not travel as discussed in many previous other articles and talks of 4am bar closings and designing more roof top and open patio bars ,I challange you that night to stand at starbucks on santa monica blvd and westmount (3-4 blocks away) or even the garage above 24 hour fitness, better yet the park and you will hear the noise. While some may say its only one… Read more »
