The Los Angeles Gay Men’s Chorus has posted online a video that contrasts its performance in October 1999 at Tchaikovsky Hall in Moscow before an LGBT audience with the current environment of LGBT oppression.
The video shows GMCLA singers on stage before nearly 2,000 people in a performance that was televised live on Russian television. It is considered one of the largest gatherings of LGBT people in Russia’s history.
It juxtaposes this momentous occasion with videos of gay men being beaten as they demonstrate for their rights after the passage last year of a law banning gay “propaganda.”
GMCLA has posted the video just ahead of Friday’s beginning of the Winter Olympics in the Russian city of Sochi, which has prompted international debate about Russia’s bias against LGBT people at a time when countries around the world are sending athletes to compete in the games.
