The City Council agreed tonight to ask city staffers to prepare a proposal for instituting a 45-day moratorium on construction of new two-story houses in West Hollywood.
If adopted, the proposal, which will be presented to the Council at its March 3 meeting, would block construction of two-story houses for which permits have not already been granted while the city’s Community Development Department develops a plan to address concerns by some residents about the size and style of the houses being built in their neighborhoods.
Complaints about so-called “big box” houses have led to a petition campaign by the West Hollywood West Residents Association to request a moratorium. Most of the homes in West Hollywood West, a neighborhood bounded by Melrose Avenue on the north, Beverly Boulevard on the south, La Cienega Boulevard on the east and Doheny Drive on the west, are single-family or duplex buildings built in the 1920s and 1930s.
Residents have complained that new houses being built don’t complement the style of the existing houses and are too big. Mayor Abbe Land asked that the city staff also look into the quality of the new construction to ensure that those houses really meet city codes.
The West Hollywood West petition can be viewed and signed online. As of 11:30 p.m., it had 111 signatures.

I’m no fan of Duran. But people need to stop with this whole “Developers are buying our council” shtick. This is how our democracy works. People are allowed to make campaign contributions.
This city is going to keep growing. You can’t just stop people from moving here. So we need more development and more housing. Get your hands out of the sand. We can’t live in some Occupy Utopia.
So what, they get “outside” money contributed to their campaign’s. They seem to be reelected by the voters time-after-time. “Out of town money” is such a laughable charge in Weho. We’re a tiny town surrounded by the second-largest city in America. Get over it.
And guess what: the world’s gonna keep growing. People are gonna keep moving to LA. And to Weho. Last time I checked, the Ranchos went away many, many years ago. You want low density? Move out to some place like Calabassas. This is the middle of the Big City here.

The greed in forced density into weho is a run away train. With all the out of town money the incumbents collected in the last election and the ruse of a planning committee that listens to the residents, the urban village is being run over by a thirst for profits. Its time for real campaign finance reform and council members disclosing the amount they received during votes, specifically with zoning laws are side stepped with the common trump card of “over riding considerations”
