The West Hollywood City Council is set to choose a new mayor tonight, and that’s almost certain to be John D’Amico.

D’Amico, a first-term council member who will run for re-election next year, holds the title “mayor pro tempore,” a Latin phrase that means “for the time being.” As such he assumes leadership of City Council meetings if Mayor Abbe Land is not present.

It’s been a tradition in West Hollywood for the Council to name the mayor pro tempore as the city’s next mayor, which itself is largely an honorary position that rotates year to year among council members.

In addition to managing City Council meetings, the mayor signs official documents for the city. As a practical matter, the mayor serves as the face of the city, attending numerous public events on the city’s behalf.

The new mayor will replace Abbe Land, who has held the position four times in her 20 years on the Council

Installation of the mayor will take place on April 21.

Good Luck John.. I’m so proud to watch you take the Mayor’s seat. You worked hard to earn it and it’s been a pleasure to know you and serve as your appointment to the Disability Advisory Board. You have lifted this city with your demeanor and spirit in so many ways.

Well… I hope you get an unanimous vote tonight. Last time around John Duran abstained from voting for Abbe Land. Sometime’s these protocol issue’s can be used to send a political message. I’m looking forward to your unanimous vote.
