If Hollywood’s Museum of Death hasn’t sated your appetite for the macabre, you might consider paying a visit to Gallerie Sparta’s upcoming exhibit of 12 of Dr. Jack Kevorkian’s oil paintings.
In addition to the paintings, which will be exhibit and for sale, the West Hollywood gallery will exhibit the “Thanatron,” an assisted suicide machine. It will be offered to the highest bidder.
The gallery, at 8641 Sunset Blvd. near Sunset Plaza Drive, will open the exhibit with a reception from 6 to 9 p.m. Apr. 3. No doubt expecting an overflow crowd, it is requesting that those wanting to attend RSVP to galleriesparta@gmail.com. The exhibit will be up through the month of April. Collectors who want an early look at the work can arrange a visit beginning Friday by calling gallerie owner Stephen Sparta at (646) 228-6171.
Kevorkian, famed or notorious, depending on one’s point of view, was a prominent and outspoken advocate for assisted suicide, which he claimed was a right under the Ninth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. He also was an artist, author, musical composer and inventor, holding more than 20 scientific patents and was nominated for a Nobel Prize. Kevorkian served eight years in prison for refusing to halt his work with the terminally ill.
His work was the inspiration for “You Don’t Know Jack”, a film that garnered both Golden Globe and Emmy Awards, with Al Pacino playing the role of Kevorkian.
