What’s in a Name? ‘WeHo’ Opens as St. Louis’s Only Downtown Gay Bar

If you’re stuck in St. Louis and wishing you were in WeHo, soon you’ll be in luck.

Next week WeHo will open as the only gay bar in downtown St. Louis according to that city’s Riverfront Times. And yes, just as here, WeHo is short for West Hollywood. What better way to signal that a bar is welcoming gay customers?

WeHo will replace Lotus on Locust at 2001 Locust St., which runs from downtown St. Louis to the city’s Grand Center nightlife hub. Manager JoJo Zahner told Riverfront that the bar will feature a VJ, and he’ll keep its tin ceilings, chandeliers and leather booths. He’s hoping for a mixed crowd for the 3 to 7 p.m. happy hour, which will morph into a gay clientele as the night wears on.

Zahner, who once lived in California, is a noted professional poker player who clearly has strengthened his bet on WeHo’s success with the branding. We’ll wait to see if the City of St. Louis sponsors a Go Go Appreciation Day before deciding whether it poses any serious competition to West Hollywood in luring gay travelers.
