The shuttering of MJ’s in Silver Lake presented an opportunity for West Hollywood’s Fubar, which has launched a weekly transgender event called Bionic.

Bionic host Jazzmun and co-promoter DJ Stalker Channing used to do events at MJ’s, said Fubar owner Jay Krymis. They now present Fubar’s recurring Monday night event Bionic, billed as a “trans-cendental night” with “go-go women galore.”

Bionic has been running for a few weeks, Krymis said, and it draws a mixed crowd. Krymis said that Bionic has started slowly, although last week that was likely due to the Memorial Day holiday.

“I hope it grows as we get the word out,” Krymis said. “I would like to do a little of everything … I like to be inclusive.”

Whether Bionic will experience a power surge in WeHo remains to be seen, but there’s no doubt that transgender visibility has reached new heights in recent months. Actress Laverne Cox (Orange is the New Black), who has amassed a loyal following and landed a TIME Magazine cover, is among those who have raised awareness about transgender issues.
