Don’t Go Postal, Go to Doheny (to Find the West Hollywood Post Office)

You can still buy stamps at West Hollywood’s former post office on San Vicente, but if you need assistance mailing a package or with other services, head to the post office’s new location on Doheny instead.

The services and staff of the old post office have been relocated to 458 N. Doheny Drive at Dorrington (near Melrose), which opened its doors on July 7. Its hours are the same as at the previous location: 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m. on Saturday.

P.O. box customers will have the same P.O. box numbers and ZIP codes, according to a post office news release. The new location will offer 24-hour access to P.O. box mail and a self-service kiosk where customers can buy stamps and mail items after retail hours.

A self-service kiosk will also remain at the old location, 820 N. San Vicente Blvd. at Santa Monica. That location is now a “letter carrier annex,” according to Richard Maher, public information officer for the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) in the L.A. area. The change from full-service post office to letter carrier operation was part of a plan that also included selling the Beverly Hills post office, which was “much larger than we needed,” Maher said. (USPS plans to lease a portion of the large Beverly Hills building and to continue retail services there.)

“The relocation of West Hollywood Post Office’s retail operations, like the many closures of entire facilities around the country, has done little to save USPS money, but only served to degrade the quality and convenience of service to residents. Until the Postal Service modifies the burden of prefunding its retirement plan in such short order, it will continue to operate at an artificial but enormous deficit,” Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Burbank) said via e-mail.

Schiff previously criticized plans to move WeHo’s post office, as did WeHo Councilmembers Abbe Land and Jeffrey Prang. Schiff and the city touted the previous location’s accessibility, especially in regard to seniors, the disabled and others who rely on non-vehicle transportation. USPS has pointed out that the new location is available via sidewalks and public transit.

There is no handicapped parking available except street parking. My father was in a wheelchair for the last year of his life. I know how difficult it can be to get around. They need dedicated handicapped parking.

The USPS should sell the San Vicente property entirely and turn it over to developers. It’s a wonderful location for apartments/condos – conceivably, residents could rarely use their cars in a location like that. Smart growth builds a world-class city.

There is no kiosk selling stamps at the West Hollywood Branch on San Vicente. It has been gutted and looks dismal inside. The doors are locked and the upper parking lot is a mess.

Wehoan Fed Up with the NIMBYS–In case you’re unaware (though I suspect you are since you always seem to be in bed with them), the problem was created some years ago by the GOP in Congress: ‘“The relocation of West Hollywood Post Office’s retail operations, like the many closures of entire facilities around the country, has done little to save USPS money, but only served to degrade the quality and convenience of service to residents. Mail is so awful. Its a waste of paper and time. Weho really doesn’t even need two Post Offices the one on fairfax is sufficient. this Doheny one is EXTREMELY close to one in Beverly Hills. they should have only closed the San Vicente one to save money not open another.

@Todd Bianco. I love you but not everything is about cars. However, if the Melrose Triangle Project gets approved, I think people could park there, given the 800+ spaces and walk a block or two. “Just sayin”

The Beverly Hills Post Office on N. Maple Drive is open. I mailed two packages today. Two windows were open and the short line moved quickly. There is free parking in the building and metered parking on both Maple and Third.

I don’t think driving to another city to go to the post office is really the remedy we were all looking for.

Of course, you can always go to the Eastside for the post office at Fairfax which is STILL in West Hollywood. Plenty of parking at Whole Foods across the street and there are even boxes available for rent! So sorry that its farther from Beverly Hills.

The city protested this, but had zero control over the decision. The earlier comment that no parking is allowed on nearby residential streets is inaccurate. If you can find it, parking is free and legal during daytime hours. One thing my carrier told me – he works out of the Fairfax/Melrose branch, and now if there is an undeliverable package (after several attempts) one will need to go there, rather than the Doheny address, to retrieve it. That said, I regret the loss of the previous location. But for what it’s worth, it has already cleared up the traffic near… Read more »

With respect to Tim, you are very misinformed.
Why did the Republicans do this? File under Blame Bush?
USPS is broke and In 2006 Democrats controlled the Senate by holding 51 out of 100 seats. They also gained control of the House of Representatives.
Why are they talking about cutting out Saturday deliveries?
Funding ridiculously bloated pensions for union members who have no say in having their dues donated to who? Republicans? Really?

I have to agree with the commenters that the new location is terrible and inconvenient. It hardly feels like it serves West Hollywood when it’s so far on the edge of town. The parking situation is horrible. It seems like the United States Post Office just stopped caring.
