APLA Health & Wellness is now offering primary medical care as well as dental care and mental health counseling in south L.A. The former APLA Health & Wellness Center has become the Gleicher/Chen Health Center, 3743 S. La Brea Avenue at Coliseum (in the Baldwin Hills Shopping Center).
“This drastically expands what we are able to do,” said Mikel Wadewitz, director of communications for AIDS Project Los Angeles.
Wadewitz said that services are already being offered at the clinic, although some final construction work is still being finished up. There will be a grand opening on Wednesday, Oct. 1 at 9 a.m. People will have an opportunity to see the clinic, which includes five exam rooms and four dental chairs, before the program starts at 11 a.m. Wadewitz said that the program hasn’t been finalized but that it will include remarks by Craig Thompson, CEO of APLA Health & Wellness and APLA executive director.
Wadewitz said that the clinic is geared toward serving the LGBT community in south L.A., including but not limited to those who are HIV-positive. In addition to primary medical care and dental, it offers STD testing and treatment as well as HIV testing. The staff includes an HIV specialist, and counsel on PrEP is available.
This article has been updated to correct the number of dentail chairs at the clinic and to clarify that the clinic is an APLA Health & Wellness site.
