There’s nothing not to love about dogs, except…
The City of West Hollywood and some local residents are launching new initiatives to deal with that poop problem, which some say is on the increase.
At the City Council’s meeting on Sept. 8, Councilmember Abbe Land asked city staffers to come back to the Council with ideas about how to deal with the problem of dog owners not picking up dog waste in public areas. The West Hollywood West Residents Association is reaching out to its members with a campaign called “Pick It Up.”
“We all do a pretty good job of picking up our doggie poop around here,” the association said in an email message to its members. “But we’ve noticed and heard some complaints about a rash of the messy droppings not being picked up as required.
“Please help keep West Hollywood West clean. Pick It Up, Tie It Up and dispose of it in your trash bin.”
There are city and county ordinances that require pet owners to pick up animal waste. At the request of the City Council, the West Hollywood Sheriff’s Station has adopted a “no tolerance” policy for dog owners leaving dog waste in public places. Such waste may include germs and harmful chemicals and nutrients that can be washed into storm drains and pollute local waterways..
Thank you Rudolf! What is it with small dogs being possessed by the devil as the most aggressive dogs around?!?! Yet their owners act as if they’re small delicate children – only encouraging their aggressive behavior. If you react at all, you’re treated as if you’re not a dog lover – or worse! I don’t mind picking up my own dogs poop. they say it keeps the water supply cleaner. yeah right. Where does it go from the landfill after it goes in their ground from there?
My feeling is that people have to stop crying for the city to be a nanny for them and take responsibility for their own block. Responsible dog owners are probably in the majority but they have to make up for those that give dog owners a bad name. I always have extra bags with me and pick up everything I see on my block and I know others who do the same. I hear you, but I gotta say, I’ve tried it & while I have no problem cleaning up my own dog’s poop, there’s something about cleaning up another dog’s cold poop that just grosses me out. I’m just a say’n…..
And as far as asking others who I see not cleaning up, I’ve offered them bags (as I always have extras in my pocket) and the response has been chilly….
I have 2 dogs and ALWAYS pick up after them. I am always shocked at the amount of dog sh*t I see on my walks. The city even provides bags and bins for us…it doesn’t get much easier than that! It’s just disgusting, selfish, lazy pigs who shouldn’t own dogs!
Simple…have Code Enforcement spend a couple of days a month in various areas of the City and watch for violators. Once people actually have to start paying a fine..they’ll learn pretty quick. In all the years I’ve lived in this City, I’ve never once heard of anyone every getting ticketed for this violation. What good are rules if they are not enforced.
Jonathan, it seems that common courtesy is dead and buried. It’s very difficult to legislate to the self-entitled. Sadly enough, this is all a reflection of citizenry gone rogue. There are so many more examples but let’s not aggravate ourselves by enumerating them.
Here’s my thought (and you guys know I always have plenty of them!), Have City Council empower both the Sheriff’s department and the bike ambassadors to write citations with financial penalties for quality of life issues–off leash dogs, not picking up after dogs, excessive noise complaints (the latter only by the Sheriff). Don’t make it their priority to out & about & away from regular public safety issues, but if they see it….
THANK YOU, Jonathan! The fake “service dogs” in grocery stores grates on me the most. The registration for them can be easily obtained on the internet. Anyone whose “anxiety” is so high that they can’t cope for 30 minutes to do their grocery shopping and leave Fifi at home, needs more than a dog to help them manage through life. The old guy with multi-colored hair and beard who takes his service pit-bull everywhere, including the gym, needs some intervention. Two years ago in a meet the mayor meeting at the park I asked about a pet owners guidelines or education campaign to then mayor Jeffery Prang He said Ill get right on it. Never done Now hes actually claiming to be a pet advocate and asking for money for his campaign Shame on you Prang ! I love dogs I developed the first disaster prep kit for dogs years ago. Once again, no good deed goes unpunished by some around here.
From the dept of the obvious, the council is quite aware if they elevate an issue and nothing happens, it makes them look ridiculous and there will be a backlash. The fact that the overwhelming number of WeHo voters re-elect incumbents shows that the council actually is responsive to the needs of the city and people here, despite the naysayers in these threads, are pleased with their actions.
I dog sat for a month and was SHOCKED at the amount of dog poop in bags that people just leave anywhere. I mean the city provides those doggie poop stations and there are trash bins on the major streets to drop them into. If they bring a bag, they should be able to dispose of it properly.
I love the “no tolerance” policy. I winner how many times the Sheriffs Dept. Has cited dog owners since the policy had been in effect. My guess is its between zero and 0. Anyone? These self serving councilmen love to pass motions to hear themselves speak. Let’s pass a motion to make October gogoboy appreciation month. Let’s pass a motion to ban gun sales in WH even though there are no gun stores in WH. Lets pass a motion for world peace.
