sperm-bankThe L Word told us that turkey basters were the new U-Hauls—meaning that conceiving a baby had surpassed cohabitation as a classic lesbian third-date move.

But home insemination can carry a risk for legal issues, said Corey Whelan, program director for the American Fertility Association. She encourages women to educate themselves about creating families in ways that re safe both legally and medically.

The fertility association hosts free workshops around the country, usually with some 80-100 guests attending. A West Hollywood event is slated for Oct. 28 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. It will be held at Yogurt Stop, 8803 Santa Monica Blvd. at Palm, and yogurt will be served.

The workshop will feature three speakers: an attorney who can discuss issues such as second-parent adoptions and passports, a physician and a cryobank representative. Each will talk briefly, then they will field questions from the audience.

Anyone is welcome to attend, Whelan said, but the event is designed specifically with female same-sex couples in mind. Guests will receive a handbook with information about insemination, and there will be two drawings for free vials of sperm from California Cryobank, which is sponsoring the event.

The event is free, but Whelan does like to have a head count. Reserve space by contacting her at (718) 853-1411 or [email protected].
