Would a Dancing Traffic Light Make WeHo Pedestrians Wait?

With West Hollywood likely to install more synchronized stop lights at crosswalks on Santa Monica Boulevard in the near future, what can keep pedestrian waiting on the sidewalk until the crosswalk light turns green?

The answer might be dancing traffic lights, a model for which was installed this summer at a traffic intersection in Lisbon, Portugal. The project, undertaken by the manufacturer of the Smart car, involved the installation of a small enclosure in which passersby were invited to dance on camera. The dances were simultaneously projected onto the pedestrian waiting lights at the stoplights. According to Smart, the dance traffic lights reduced by 81 percent the number of pedestrians who crossed the street against the light.

Could this be the solution in West Hollywood, where for most of the population dancing is second nature?

I drive through this area regularly and am very safe – no citations in 20 years. Comments: a) Pedestrians around here walk as if traffic will magically stop -without breaking- the minute they decide to cross. Use your heads. Look the driver in the eye before putting yourself in front of a moving mass of steel. Otherwise, it’s called Natural Selection. b) We should most certainly have proper markings etc for a safe crosswalk, however, once that is complete, it is not city councils fault nor any governing authority if a pedestrian wishes to walk unsafe. With this in mind…… Read more »

The police need to start giving tickets for jaywalking. It’s ridiculous, dangerous, and flat-out dumb how many adults walk across when there is an orange/red hand saying not to cross.

it made me smile, and for a city like west hollywood, which seems to have lost it’s free spirited sense of humor, the dancing cross walk man is a perfect fit.
go for it. i’m sure it’ll be less expensive than a multi million dollar robot garage.

I never said drive everywhere. What I did say was practice Defensive Walking. Stepping off the curb only because you have the “Walk Sign” without looking to see if it’s safe to do so is stupid. You maybe in the right but you may also be dead.

Ridiculous. People just need to be patient and wait until the light is green or it is safe to cross.

The city council can put lights up at every corner with sirens on top of them. But some idiot will step out in front of a moving vehicle and get hit. Because you have the “Walk Sign” doesn’t mean it’s SAFE to cross. You will be in the right, and keep telling yourself that as your being dragged down the street under the vehicle that hit you.

Start practicing Defensive Walking!

This is wonderful! Let’s put people next to the crosswalk registering people to vote. Ask them to vote for candidates that support “walk-friendly” West Hollywood businesses. Oh, that means they must be pro business, not Anti-everything, or on the Fence with JP’s tacit endorsement, or Larry, licking your heals with a guide dog to take you to the polls and press the “I’m a Clown” button. Let’s get serious people. We need to elect people who: 1) Have principles;) 2) Confirm their commitment to the Community; and 3) Are committed to a balance of growth; services to residents; and 3)… Read more »

Good news! This should have been down years ago. These council members should all be sued for not doing their job in up holding their responsibilities in taking care of this issue years ago. People where hurt and died as a result of their incompetence. Shame on you WH council members! In West LA up past Sepulveda there are many traffic lights. Annoying for people driving but necessary as there are many pedestrians crossing the street. People speed down Santa Monica Blvd.,in West Hollywood as if it were a freeway.
