West Hollywood is celebrating Transgender Awareness month this year by presenting “Transient,” a curated mobile group show that develops ideas about sharing and recognizing visibility within and outside of the transgender community, from Nov. 20 to 24.
Enclosed within a transportable space, “Transient” uses the truck as conceptual framework to create relationships to space outside and inside, rather than reconstructing a familiar, or stable, exhibition space that panders to the mainstream. The project brings awareness to predicated perceptions of transgender art practices with cultural and historical contexts, accessible through travel and placement of the exhibition space.
Los Angeles-based artist Kean O’Brien brings curatorial direction to Transient that revolves around ideas of visibility — whether personal visibility for the artist, narrative visibility, or circumstantial visibility. Artists include Zackary Drucker, Yishay Garbasz, Heather Cassils, Jules Gimbrone, Oli Rodriguez, Nicki Green, Pilar Gallego, Niv Acosta, Madsen Minax, Finn Paul and Laub.
“Transient,” as a mobile show, will move between different spaces during its run. It will open at 6 p. on Nov. 20 in commemoration of Transgender Day of Remembrance aat the West Hollywood Library, 625 N. San Vicente Blvd. south of Santa Monica. Admission is free. On Nov. 21, from 5 to 11 p.m., the show will move to a space on Santa Monica Boulevard; on Nov. 22 from 6 p.m. to midnight, the show will be located on Sunset Boulevard; on Nov. 23 the show will take place at the intersection of York Boulevard and Avenue 50 in Highland Park in Los Angeles.
Nov. 24 at 7 p.m. there will be a “Transient” panel discussion at the City of West Hollywood’s City Council Chambers/Public Meeting Room (located next to Jones Coffee) at West Hollywood Library, located at 625 N. San Vicente Boulevard. Admission is free.
