The Thrive Tribe, a West Hollywood-based organization formed to provide support for those with HIV and their families and friends, has become a tax-exempt foundation. The Tribe now has established ancillary groups such as the “Tribe Friends,” for those who want to support their friends with HIV, and the “Families,” for those whose relatives have HIV. At its core is the “Brotherhood,” a group of more than 1,500 HIV positive men who meet regularly for potluck dinners, movie outings, bowling, hikes and other experiences focused on thriving in this new era when HIV no longer is seen as a fatal disease.
The Thrive Tribe is celebrating the formal launch of its foundation with a series of events Dec. 1 to 7. The week is called “Geronimo,” which Foundation President and Executive Director Kevin Stalter describes as “an ancient call from a tribal leader to take a leap of faith or jump into a new era, and that is exactly what we are doing with HIV….
“Our mission is to create communities that connect, educate and empower people affected by and living with HIV. Our vision is to create a status-neutral world where everyone thrives.”
In the video above, Stalter outlines the series of events, which range from screening of “The Normal Heart” on World AIDS Day, an event on the Queen Mary in Long Beach, a Hollywood costume exhibit, a bowling night, and a canyon hike. The finale of the week will be a party at the Historic Hollywood Athletic Club. Tickets can be purchased online, with a discount available through Nov. 24. The entry price includes open bar, food and entertainment.
