To drive home the “Don’t Drink and Drive” message this holiday season, members of the West Hollywood City Council, officers from the West Hollywood Sheriff’s Station, members of the city’s Public Safety Commission and Block by Block security workers will hold a press conference on Santa Monica and San Vicente boulevards on Monday near a car destroyed by a drunk driver.
To reinforce the message that driving while intoxicated is dangerous, an additional crashed car will be placed at the Queens Parking Lot at Sunset Boulevard and Queens Road after Dec. 29.
Following the 5:45 p.m. news conference, a group of city officials and Sheriff’s deputies will walk to nearby restaurants and bars to distribute more than 200,000 drink napkins with printed messages reminding patrons not to drink and drive and to instead choose a designated driver or a local taxicab company. The napkins will feature telephone numbers for West Hollywood taxicab companies.
This year’s “Don’t Drink and Drive” campaign also is supported by the L.A. County Fire Department, the Sunset Strip Business Association, local licensed taxi companies and The Pickup, the city’s free weekend nightlife shuttle.
The Sheriff’s Department earlier announced that it will conduct a driving under the influence / unlicensed drivers checkpoint at an undisclosed location in West Hollywood from 7 p.m. on Dec. 13 until 3 a.m. the next morning.
On New Year’s Eve this year the city also will offer a free shuttle along Santa Monica Boulevard from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. The service will follow the same route as the weekend PickUp line, which runs from 8 p.m. until 3 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays along Santa Monica Boulevard between Robertson Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue.
