West Hollywood and the West Hollywood Sheriff’s Station are partnering in the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department “Gifts for Guns” program. This program provides an opportunity for local citizens to safely and anonymously surrender any firearm to the Sheriff’s Department in exchange for a gift card.

West Hollywood gunsThe Gifts for Guns program will host an event on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Plummer Park at 7377 Santa Monica Blvd. Participants will be directed to checkpoints where the firearms will be located, inventoried, surrendered and rendered safe. Members of the public who wish to participate in the program should transport unloaded weapons in the trunks of their vehicles to the collection event. Sheriff’s deputies and authorized volunteers will be available for people to safely surrender any firearms.

A total of $15,000 worth of gift cards, redeemable at Ralphs grocery stores or at Target stores, will be available at the event while supplies last. Gift card denominations are determined by the firearm being surrendered — $400 for assault weapons; $100 for a handgun, rifle, or shotgun, and $50 for a non-operational firearm. The cost of gift cards was underwritten by City of West Hollywood.

An examination last year by WEHOville of data from the state Firearms Bureau showed 2,581 handguns and long rifles have been registered in West Hollywood, a city with 24,599 households. Assaults rifles and handguns, such as the Bushmaster AR-15 rifle used in the Newtown, Conn., elementary school massacre, are few and far between, accounting for only four of those registered.

@ JustAMan: I agree. Targeting lawbiding citizens owning guns is not targeting criminals. It is disarming the non-criminals. Criminals use UNREGISTERED guns. This is all show to make it look like the public is safer. Its taking advantage of the low information voter. Guns are not a privilege but a right protected by the Constitution along side free speech.

This video is amusing but true: https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=4123638147897 (Listen to the content.)

Schools should have armed security guards and a locked/guarded premises. Banks do…

The residents should be asking why they are doing this turn in and spending 15k on a task that even the presidents study stated has no effect on crime. One of the large antigun groups also stated this year that their own studies show these types of activities have no impact on crime.
