A man who was killed on Saturday while hang gliding in the Kagel Canyon area above Sylmar has been identified as Markus Michael Albert Schaedler, a resident of West Hollywood.
The L.A. County Coroner’s Office today publicly identified Schaedler. He was with a group of four who descended from a mountain peak known as Hang Glider Point. Authorities were summoned about 6:20 p.m. Saturday when he failed to show up at a rally point, Sheriff’s Lt. Bill Jaeger said.
A search was conducted and the crumpled hang glider was found, along with Schaedler, 59, who was pronounced dead at the scene, Jaeger said.
Schaedler, who lived on Kings Road, was a member of the Sylmar Hang Gliding Association. His LinkedIn profile identifies him as a chef who worked in research and development at Gourmet Foods.

Very tragic, I knew Markus from Austria in 1983. We talked about him going to Vail. Off he went!! I knew Hang Gliding was his passion!!!

Ah!!!! We will miss Chef Marcus. He was a great guy and a great Chef. Always willing to stop and chat, especially if it was about his beloved hand gliding. We enjoyed his company at our wedding and it was an honor to know him. He will be missed.

good mood no matter what , had a great sense of humor , and was friendly to all . No attitude

I happily flew with Markus. He always had a quick and great smile and sense of humor. One of the nicest guys you would ever want to meet. I miss him greatly.
He was my cousin in law. Here in Austria where he is from, there is such sadness and
shock at his passing. He was a lovely, kind man and we will miss him very very much.

he is my neighbor. i have known him and his wife for more than ten years. our building is so sad today.
This is a real tragedy & I am very sad for this young man & his family & friends. My thoughts after reading about his passing is that most, if not all adults I know, (including myself) have expressed that they hope they go quickly without suffering & while doing something that they love. I hope that this was true in both cases for Marcus Michael Albert Schaedler. RIP
