Firefighters at Station 7 in West Hollywood had a long day yesterday as they struggled to rescue as many as 150 people from a flooded building on West Knoll Drive.
But then they have had some fun. Capt. Fred Salmo said they happily showed a man and his children around the station when he stopped by to explain that his youngest daughter was fascinated by fire engines. “For a half hour we didn’t know who they were. We just welcomed them in,” Salmo said of the visitors. Salmo declined a request by some of the children to slide down the fire pole. But then they pointed out that some members of their family were very athletic. “I asked them who,” Salmo recalled. “They said David, and I said oh my God. It was David Beckham. They were here for a few hours taking pictures and having fun.”
The famous English footballer posted the photo on his official Facebook page, and as of this writing it has received nearly 600,000 “likes.” “Thanks to all the guys at the LA.CO.F.D. Engine 7,” he posted. “Great tour for the kids and the big kid. These guys are amazing.”
Firefighters are absolutely amazing. They are only dedicated to saving lives. They are truly incredible. But I also found incredible that no one realized it was David Beckham. This man’s picture (let alone of his wife) has been plastered everywhere. Anyway, I had the great good fortune of meeting him when he and I were at Samy’s Camera on Fairfax a few years ago. He was very pleasant and kind. It was a thrill to meet him in person and exchange a few words. However, Firefighters really rock ! !
Cute story!
