Yesterday’s unusual rainfall flooded an apartment building owned by the Los Angeles County Housing Authority, forcing the removal of about 150 people to temporary shelter at the Plummer Park Community Center.

Capt. Fred Salmo of Station 7 of the L.A. County Fire Department said that construction had been taking place on the roof of the four-story building at 838 N. West Knoll Dr. north of Sherwood. The roof was covered with a plastic tarp, Salmo said, but the unexpected intensity of the rain caused water to flood beyond it and leak down through the entire building.

Salmo said employees of the City of West Hollywood joined firefighters and the Red Cross in removing the residents. He said it is unclear how long they will remain in the temporary shelter. “I haven’t in a long time had to displace a whole building,” he said. “A lot of them are elderly and some are disabled. It was sad.”

What is still in Place for the Residents of West Knoll Apartments or A Sinister Solar Panels Project and its proponets, no matter what Lack of information depletes one’s ability of decision-making. By and large, the state of affairs is not entangled when we know who, how and when. Speaking to the tenants of West Knoll Apartments, I became able to reinstate the course of devastating decisions and corollary of them implications. But what is much more important to know, it was not the chain of incompetent and irresponsible decisions that took morally and financially detrimental toll on the residents… Read more »

It is obvious that an ill-concieved solar panels project has to be canceled.
It is a matter of accountability of officials on all levels

This is a devastating situation. It all has begun with a project of installing the solar panels. This project was not substantiated and it was also not publicly discussed. Once the first emergency situation occurred on July 18, 2015, residents were resettled for almost two months. In the course of renovating works, it is believed that building was under the rigorous inspections. This inspection, however, missed the main cause of the disaster, the undone and unfinished roof. Whether or the roof was inspected by the officials of West Hollywood and County remains unknown. My mother lives in this building. Rescue… Read more »

oh this is such a terrible thing to have happened. I have visited there many times. One time 2 council members were campaging to get reelected and my friend showed them a HUGE hole in the hallway roof (no way it could have been missed) all that they said was how nice it was that lunch was being provided free by a Jewish organization everyday. I don’t know who is responsible for this terrible management buy the City of West Hollywood politican’s are asleep, or stupid, or crooks or something. Shame shame shame!!!

I pick up the recycle stuff all over the city for many years and I know that building well. There was work going on but only on a section of it. I don’t believe it could have flooded the whole building. something is wrong about this story and I want to find out the truth. Maybe the Mayor or Councilmembers will tell me the truth. And what about these old sic people who must suffer from this and what about that woman’s cat and other peoples pets. and I know for a fact that some of the construction workers and… Read more »

I cannot even think, it’s overwhelming the way housing and the LA Supervisors doing what they want that they can ask for more money from the HUD from the government. That they can abuse their authority. And this is a lot to say but I am to sick to think about it. The whole thing makes me sick that they advertise that they are for safety and care about the people and it’s nothing like that. They have power and when they feel like it they ask for more money and they abuse the people. They have power they abuse… Read more »

This is a horrible and unacceptable situation. The Housing Authority receives millions and millions of dollars annually to manage the buildings. The Housing Authority will probably get extra money from the government for this disaster. It is unacceptable and they should be sued and have penalties from the Department of Urban Development. It would have to be a very big law firm to be willing to take on the LA County Supervisors, naming the County Housing Authority, but someone should do it. HUD, which hands them the money should figure out a way to not let this County Housing Authority… Read more »

The West Knoll Apartments, like the Palm Apartments, are not owned by the LA County Housing Authority ~~ only ‘managed’ by the HACoLA. They are conventional housing, financed and subsidized thru HUD but owned by LA County as a library or hospital might be. People wonder why the roof needed repair since the entire building had major renovations, which necessitated residents to be relocated for almost 2 years, approximately 10 ago, The HACoLA answers, supposedly, to the LA County Supervisors, who might be paying much attention.

Seemed to be taking a long time for that roof to get fixed. A crew should have been sent at the first hint of rain. Not nice to cause the elderly to go though that.
