WeHo Honors Four with Disabilities Service Awards

West Hollywood will honor four people and organizations on Wednesday at its annual Disabilities Service Awards event.

The 17th annual event will occur at 6 p.m. at the City Council Chambers at 625 N. San Vicente Blvd., south of Santa Monica. The Disability Service Awards event recognizes individuals, businesses and nonprofit organizations for work with people living with disabilities including accessibility issues, attention to ADA requirements or advocacy.

.This year’s Disability Service Award recipients are:

• U. S. Rep. Adam Schiff, who will receive the Lovedy Brydon Differently Abled Individual Award.

• Capitol Drugs, which will receive the Business Award

• The Los Angeles LGBT Center, WeHo, which recently opened a West Hollywood HIV/STD testing center and will receive the Nonprofit Award.

• Special Olympics Southern California, which will receive the Nonprofit Award .

In addition to the awards presentation, there will be a reception a performance by the Braille Institute’s Johnny Mercer Children’s Choir. Validated parking will be available to guests in the West Hollywood Park five-story parking structure. Admission is free and open to the public.

In West Hollywood, where 14 percent of the population is living with a disability, the city’s Disabilities Advisory Board was created in 1995 and is comprised of nine members. The Disabilities Advisory Board addresses issues affecting people with disabilities, including compliance with the federal Americans with Disabilities Act, transportation, housing, access to city government and services for people with disabilities, and makes recommendations to the City Council relative to the adoption of programs, policies, or ordinances of benefit to the constituency.
