A man pumping gas at Sunset Oil on Sunset Boulevard at San Vicente was attacked yesterday afternoon by a man carrying a knife.

The attacker, apparently a homeless man, approached his victim at about 2 p.m. and slashed his face for no apparent reason. The man’s face apparently was cut from his nose to his ear.

Sgt. Lance Eddins of the West Hollywood Sheriff’s Station said the attacker was arrested and is in custody, charged with assault with a daily weapon. Eddins said the victim was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Some residents complain that West Hollywood is experiencing an increase in homeless people. In recent months the Sheriff’s Station has focused on that situation on the city’s Eastside, where the manager of the McDonald’s restaurant has complained about homeless people camping out in the restaurant. Local residents have reported homeless people in their neighborhoods apparently looking for garages or other spaces to sleep in.

the people with money need to step up an build a facility for the homeless which provides housing, medical, mental health services. it might cost a billion dollars to build but there’s a lot of people out there with a lot of money. dr’s. and Rn’s could work there right out of med school and get help with student loans. I would give half of what I have if some of the super rich contributed. the entire project would take two years to build. los angeles could be the frontrunner in what would be the best thing to ever happen… Read more »

The homeless numbers in the area between LA Cienega & Robertson have gotten hopelessly out of hand. It is not a question of compassion, generosity or benevolence, it has become a matter of public safety & quality of life for the residents of West Hollywood. Walking that stretch with a visiting friend on the holiday, we were virtually surrounded by homeless people with their hands out, many very young men. It was a very uncomfortable walk. I was tempted to ask my friend to stop handing out dollar bills. We cannot walk to the CVS on the corner without literally… Read more »

Tim that is deplorable coming from another victim of crime. I had 3 teenaged put a hole in the front of my mouth. I was lucky to have stitches dissolve in the mouth that dissolved over 2 years but you have a life altering attack. 4 years ago a homeless man threw a wrench at me and I ducked but this worries me and makes me afraid. Just 10 days ago a crazy person who was the opposite race but race had nothing to do with a violent attack but I was nasties and given racial slurs, you just don’t… Read more »

The sheriff’s need to be called each time you feel threatened, or see pan handling, crazy behavior. They can 5150 the crazy person, take them to psycho wards. Pan handling is a misdemeanor crime, get enough tickets they end up in jail. There are programs with various agencies to assist homelessness. West Hollywood city hall has referrals and help. The sheriff’s can refer homeless to shelters and referrals to other agencies.

one old (probably 70s) homeless guy (black if you’re interested) is always at the Gelsons all day everyday and slaps cars as they enter the driveway, spits and screams and all those people who work at West Hollywood City Hall next door walk past him everyday to get their lunch or snacks and do nothing about him

Hi Tim

I was the one that initially helped you. I’m glad to learn your ok. I went and flagged down the police and gave them the man’s description and his direction. They immediately radioed it in to all cars and happy that they got him.

So sorry that happened to you. I wish you a speedy recovery.

Take care.

So Sorry this happened to you, Tim. Hope you heal real soon! FWIW, I just bought a semi auto pistol, a stun gun, pepper spray, and a kubatan for self protection. I’ve seen some crazy people and crazy things walking my dog, be it noon or midnight! Knowing how to handle yourself isn’t enough anymore. In a situation like you confronted you need a weapon and need to be prepared to use it in an instant.

I am the man who was attacked at the Sunset Oil gas station yesterday. Completely unprovoked. To clarify for some of you commenting, I am 6’3″ 260lbs African American, the attacker was a 6’1″ Caucasian. But race had nothing to do with it. Crazy had something To do with it. At first he was going after another man, much smaller Caucasian. He managed to get away and before he could warn me the homeless man attacked me from behind, putting 50 stitches in my face.

Some of the panhandlers–I don’t know how many are homeless–are so aggressive that saying no spurs them to angry outbursts. It’s a no-win situation for everyone.
