Residents of West Hollywood are invited tonight to view four designs for billboards, one by the noted architect Zaha Hadid, proposed for a temporary exhibit on the city-owned billboard site at 8775 Sunset Blvd.

The exhibit will take place at the City Council Chambers, 625 N. San Vicente Blvd., south of Santa Monica. Exhibits can be reviewed in the lobby at 5 p.m. and formal presentations of the concepts will begin at 6 p.m.

Last October the city sought proposals for billboard designs that would “inspire a 21st century vision with contemporary digital and interactive technologies, media and multi-dimensional graphic design.”

It received nine applications and selected four finalists. “Each finalist proposal expands the idea about what a billboard site can be, bringing a unique perspective to the site, including kinetic signage, creative programming, viewer participation via social media, and site design for a multi-use public “square,” the city has explained on its website.

“The city will choose one of these teams to refine their proposal into an exemplary project that will inspire and delight for many years to come.”

The four finalist teams are:

— JCDecaux and Zaha Hadid Project Management

— Limited Orange Barrel Media, Tom Wiscombe Architects, MoCA

— Outfront Media, Gensler, MAK

— TAIT Towers Inc.

The expectation is that a particularly creative sign on the city lot will inspire other billboard owners and advertisers to become more creative elsewhere on the Sunset Strip, which long has been known for its creative signage. “This project will provide a real-world experiment for cutting edge digital signage to allow for public and staff review of best practices for state of the art digital advertising,” the Community Development Department said in a report to the City Council.

JCDecaux and Zaha Hadid Project Management presentation was simply amazing. Far out front and state of the art.

The 21st century still keeps coming and with public space, drought tolerant plants, seating and a new, exciting place to meet then off to experience our world recognized Sunset Strip.

Sunset Spectacular lived up to and exceeded expectations. Bravo!
