201606 noise concentration

The top 20% of West Hollywood locations with noise complaints got over 50% of the complaints. That is according to a follow-up analysis of noise complaints for 2014 and 2015 by WeHo by the Numbers.

It found that the top 5% of locations with noise complaints attracted 28% of the complaints. The next 15% of locations got 25% of the complaints. Together, that means 20% of locations got over 50% of complaints. The analysis did not distinguish between complaints coming from multiple people and complaints coming from one person over time.

The analysis also found that noise issues at the top locations persisted from year to year. Among the top 50 locations in 2014, 60% got complaints again the next year. Looking backward, 45% of the top 50 noise locations in 2015 already had noise complaints in 2014.

In an earlier analysis, WeHo by the Numbers found that two-thirds of noise complaints in 2014 and 2015 were related to construction, local businesses, and gardeners. The other third were about resident-generated noise, including pets. Complaints that went only to the Sheriff — about a loud party, for example — were not counted.

DBA, a now-closed nightclub, attracted the most complaints about business noise. The top 10 also included five restaurants or similar businesses, three hotels, and one other business. Six were on the city’s Westside and four were in the center part of the city, between La Cienega and Fairfax.

Among the top 10 locations for resident-generated noise (including pets), six were on the city’s Westside, two were in the center part of the city, and two were on the Eastside.

BY FAR, the #1 noise issue in this city is LEAF BLOWERS!!!
The city continues to bury its head and do nothing about it except a convoluted process that allows the problem to continue. The process is so ridiculous that most of the illegal alien Gardners laugh when you inform them that it is against the law for them to use gas blowers.
These gas blowers are also in the top 3 sources of air pollution for al the Green Fakes out there that ignore the problem.

There is no reason why trash collection services have to make the noise they do picking up our trash. It seems there is no type of muffler on those trucks to lessen the noise. As a former MTA employee I am well aware of the noise created when one of it’s bus tow trucks was utilized in towing a bus. The sound emitted came no where close to what we are subjected to on a daily basis. And the stupid excuse for the noise at 6:00AM or earlier that the trucks are servicing commercial property is nothing but a fallacy… Read more »

In the early 1990’s we had a noise complaint from a tenant in my apartment building that went on for over 7 and half years. The tenant threw all night parties until sunrise and the Sheriff’s department was called repeatedly on a many times weekly basis. Over 60 police reports were filed. WHY? Because even though we had contacted city hall and the West Hollywood Sheriff’s Department all the time. The Sheriff’s Department did not think it was important during the time Captain Richard Odenthal was the heavy hand that ran our West Hollywood station. No noise problem like this… Read more »

There hasn’t been yet elected the progressive politician who has the courage to put the good of the community at large ahead of political correctness, the residual harm be damned

Leaf blowers used by “gardeners” that apparently never met a rake or a broom…too high tech…. are a menace. The adjacent building has “gatherers” that show up regularly only to somehow elude the code compliance officer who has been called repeatedly for 4 years. Perhaps the officer should spend less time doing his voice over work and focus on this highly annoying problem. Or perhaps the city should find some effective officers to remedy this problem.

Why would this article not mention by name the worst offenders. It’s just pointing fingers at numbers without any connection to the establishments or addresses that cause the noise. Seems to be missing the most critical part of understanding the problem and solving it. Name the names and perhaps a remedy the noise-makers will learn a lesson.

Leaf blowers, gas OR electric powered, are an awful public nuisance of noise pollution – especially when used in alleys between residential buildings – especially before 9am or after 5pm, or on weekends. WeHo’s City Council seems terrified to intervene on behalf of complaining residents; apparently, it once became a racial issue (?!) and the Council doesn’t want bad press or lawsuits from gardeners.

Spot on, Woody. I used to feel bad for gardeners, who often struggle with lower wages, and thought that electric leaf blowers weren’t available cordless. Times have changed, and for a couple hundred bucks, they can have one. They are one of the biggest noise nuisances around. And you are correct about the pollution. I also think it would be better for the gardeners’ health if *they* weren’t breathing these fumes each day. http://www.popularmechanics.com/home/tools/g2195/best-battery-powered-leaf-blowers/ This law should be enforced. Strictly. Residents shouldn’t even need to call the city. If the city can afford to have parking officers patrol streets, they… Read more »

Are West Hollywood noise complaints concentrated? Well if you asked my neighbors and local homeless residents, I would be really surprised if they ever complained about anyone but me!

The Penthouse on Robertson (with their illegally installed band of Windows at the top of their structure) has caused a lot of headaches for the Norma Triangle in recent times. Thankfully, Code Compliance has been on top of the complaints and fined them. Now they keep those illegally installed windows closed and all has been pretty quite lately.

Not only are obnoxious noises from the gas leaf blowers horribly intrusive, the gas fumes suddenly blown into our homes & outdoor environments are deadly. Many mornings & other times when I go out with my dog we’re greeted by the sounds & smells of gas leaf blowers that linger in our ears & nose long after. along with clouds of dust & debris floating in the air around us & on parked cars as well, & sometimes when watching the morning news, we’re suddenly startled by what sounds like a helicopter outside our windows. Very disturbing. Reporting these infractions… Read more »
