You missed Carla Romo at Wednesday night’s city council election forum? You should have checked Facebook!
Romo, the only one of 10 candidates for two seats on the council who didn’t appear at the debate, took to social media instead. Her Facebook live broadcast appeared at the same time as the election forum, with Romo answering questions posed to the forum participants and also taking questions from people on Facebook.
Romo’s Facebook live broadcast garnered 33 “likes” and 805 views, two measures of its reach.
Ms. Romo might very well be an incredible person, I trust Councilmember Horvath’s assessment. And Facebook Live is a great tool to use to reach more voters, and the City should look at expanding its social media outreach. However, scheduling this Facebook Live event was a horrible mistake by Ms. Romo. It could have been scheduled any night, but she chose to do it the same night as the forum. Do any of the commenters here actually know Carla Romo? I do. She’s smart, compassionate, and sincerely interested in being of service to our community – all good things in my book. Her choice was not an act of indifference toward the electorate, arrogance, rudeness, or disrespect. Rather, Carla made a strategic choice to be unconventional and communicate with her targeted audience in a new way. Ms. Romeo missed a good opportunity to meet the public that she would like to meet. Representing a city is a full court press that needs to include all people, most all meetings, and providing a leading voice. Ms. Romeo could do her Facebook thing at all other times. I would have liked to hear from her.
Really? Arrogance at a debate and your throwing your toys out of the pram so soon after the disgraceful of the 2016 election. Instead of attending the normal cattle market debate someone decided to reach out to voters in a modern way and answer their questions. I’ll sit back and see where this candidate goes, they have shown more spine than the other candidates who are following like sheep.
Thanks Ms. Romo for thinking outside the box – a nice change and something different that, as a young professional, I feel like I can connect with. Keep fighting the good fight and representing those whose voices aren’t always heard. ✊🏽
@ Wehoville: Did Ms. Romo actually intentionally “shun” the event or was she trying an experiment? Sounds rather harsh to condemn her without knowing. Could Ms. Romo please comment in her own words?

In that the majority of “likes” are probably coming from her friends and the # of views may be coming from anywhere in the world, these numbers are meaningless. I think this was a show of complete disrespect for the other candidates, for the process and for the organizations that invested time and energy to bring an educational forum to the public. I am wholly unimpressed.
I couldn’t agree more with Dan – To me it shows a complete level of arrogance and rudeness to those that attended.
To me, Romo’s absence from the forum signals an indifference to the electorate. In essence, she’s disqualified herself.
