The Los Angeles City Council has approved a proposal by Rick Caruso to erect a 16-story tower on La Cienega Boulevard on the southern edge of West Hollywood,
The unanimous approval, which came during the council’s Tuesday meeting, means that Caruso can begin construction on what will be by far the tallest building in the area. The building will be at 333 La Cienega Blvd., just south of the Beverly Center, bordering the West Hollywood West neighborhood. Caruso hopes to have it completed in 2020.
Another developer has purchased the Mikey’s Car Wash property nearby at 431 N. La Cienega. It plans to build an apartment building there with ground-floor retail space, although details aren’t available. The developer, Stark Enterprises, paid $21.25 million for the quarter-acre lot.
Caruso’s project was supported then opposed then supported by L.A. City Councilmember Paul Koretz, whose 5th District encompasses the project. Koretz finally blessed it after Caruso agreed to reduce its height from 245 to 185 feet. The area’s zoning code limits buildings to a height of 45 feet. Caruso also has agreed to put a half million dollars into the City of Los Angeles’s affordable housing trust fund. Also, he agreed to make 10 of the building’s 154 units available to low- or moderate-income people.
The Caruso project has drawn opposition from the Beverly Wilshire Homes Association. However the Mid City West Community Council has voiced support for it.
Caruso’s Caruso Affiliated is perhaps best known for its ownership of The Grove shopping complex.
OMG its like the movie volcano
Erect a built a tower
Unfortunately, the strip mall remains. Caruso does not own that land. Look at the illustrations carefully.
RH, i believe they’re removing all those dumpy buildings in that triangle between 3rd, La Cienega, and San Vicente. This looks like a much better use of that space.
Does anyone know if that hideous strip mall on the corner is included as part of this development?
more gridlock!
