Popular Salt & Straw Ice Cream Shop Opens Friday in WeHo

Salt & Straw, the ice cream shop known as much for its around-the-block lines on Abbot Kinney Boulevard in Venice as for its frozen dessert, is opening in West Hollywood on Friday.

Salt & Straw is moving into the space at 8949 Santa Monica Blvd. at Robertson that once housed Starbucks. It will be the fifth Los Angeles location for the Portland, Ore., based company. At least in its early days it is likely to attract the sort of crowds that stood in long lines to enter the Shake Shack on Santa Monica Boulevard after it opened in last year.

“We’ve been continually inspired by all the communities like West Hollywood that make this city so vibrant, and are looking forward to becoming a part of the neighborhood fabric,” said Kim Malek, who in 2011 founded Salt & Straw with her cousin, Tyler

The new location was designed by Andee Hess of Osmose Design. Among its flavors will be freckled woodblock chocolate, avocado and strawberry sherbet.

Beginning this evening Salt & Straw will introduce itself by selling ice cream from a truck at 8921 Santa Monica Blvd. in a fund-raiser for the Trevor Project, a West Hollywood-based nonprofit that works to prevent suicide among LGBT young people. The ice cream — $1 servings — will be available there from 7 to 9 p.m. tonight and on Wednesday. On Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. there will be a pop-up ice cream station at Guisados at 8935 Santa Monica near Hilldale. After the opening of the store on Friday, Salt & Straw will be open daily from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Great News for the neighborhood, but not for my waistline. I hope the community and neighborhood embraces this new company. All the best Salt and Straw
