The City of West Hollywood celebrates seniors each May by organizing a series of events to engage its thriving population of older community members.

To kick-off Senior Month in West Hollywood, the City will host a Community Reception with AARP California. The event will take place on Monday, May 1, 2017, at 5:30 p.m., at the West Hollywood Library Community Meeting Room, located at 625 N. San Vicente Boulevard. The meeting is free and open the public. Validated parking will be provided in the adjacent five-story structure, accessible from N. San Vicente Boulevard.

Following the reception, AARP California Executive Director Nancy McPherson and Strategic Business Operations Officer Michael Murray will present a plaque to the City Council of the City of West Hollywood at its regular meeting at 6:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers/Public Meeting Room. The plaque is being conferred in recognition of the City’s leading-edge work as an Age-Friendly Community.

In 2016, the City of West Hollywood launched its Aging in Place five-year strategic plan to improve the quality of life and well-being of older adults in the City. The City provides an extensive array of services for community members who are seniors. The scale of needs, though, is growing. The Aging in Place plan is designed with a community-based approach to wellness that embraces a vision for older adults to remain in their homes as they age, supported by a continuum of services.

In late April 2017, staff members from the City of West Hollywood joined planners and practitioners from across the State of California at AARP California’s first Age-Friendly Communities Conference, which took place in Pasadena, California. West Hollywood’s representatives shared best practices from the City’s Aging in Place initiative and conference participants engaged in a policy discussion, which included topics such as housing affordability, transportation alternatives, caregiving, social isolation, and more.
