Need Help Finding ‘The One’? ‘Mr. Right’? Your ‘Future Ex-Husband’?

Kyle Langan, author of the Kyle Chronicles, shares advice on using social media for dating

What am I looking for? What interests me? What do I do? What am I’m open to? What are my sexual preferences and safety practices?

Ah, remember the old days (and if you’re under 35 you likely won’t) when those questions came up slowly and subtly over a beer at the Eagle or Mickys or maybe dinner at Café d’Etoile or Basix? Now, in this age of social media, you have to answer them before you begin your quest to meet Mr. Right or The One or your Future Ex-Husband (or Ex-Wife) with a profile on Scruff or Grindr or Hornet or CompatiblePartners.com.

So what’s the best way to describe yourself when you’re looking for a date on social media? Are you better off with a photo that shows you smiling or one that makes you look like the tough guy you’d like to think you are? Should that profile carry a long list of don’ts? How do you call out your inevitable ethnic, age and body type preferences without seeming like a bigoted jerk?

All of that and more will be discussed at Kyle Langan’s social media dating seminar on Thursday at West Hollywood Public Library. The seminar is free, but a reservation is required to ensure there will be enough room for everyone. It can be made online at http://tiny.cc/wehosm2017.

Langan is a social media consultant and the author of Hamptons2Hollywood, a lifestyle publication that covers fashion, food and fun in the Hamptons on the East Coast and in Los Angeles on the West. That site includes the Kyle Chronicles, in which Langan discusses his own love life and its various challenges and rewards.

The seminar takes place from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday in the library’s West Hollywood Room. You’re invited to bring a smartphone, tablet or laptop if you’d like. Parking is available in the structure behind the library, which is at 625 N. San Vicente Blvd., south of Santa Monica.
