The City of West Hollywood is hosting a screening next week of “13th,” a film that explores the intersection of race, justice and mass incarceration in the United States.

The film, by Ava DuVernay, director of “Selma,” has been nominated for eight Emmy awards. It takes its title from the Thirteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which abolished slavery in the United States.

A panel discussion will follow the screening. It will be moderated by Dr. Melina Abdullah, professor and Chair of Pan-African Studies at CSU Los Angeles and organizer of Black Lives Matter Los Angeles.

Guest speakers will include Tyree Boyd-Pates, history curator and program manager for the California African American Museum; Susan Burton, founder and executive director of the “A New Way of Life Reentry Project;” Patrisse Cullors, co-founder of Black Lives Matter; Christopher Jackson, a community activist and a doctoral student; Janaya Khan, co-founder of Black Lives Matter Canada, and Bamby Salcedo, president and CEO of the TransLatin@ Coalition.

The screening and discussion will take place on Thursday from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Pacific Design Center’s Silver Screen Theatre, 8687 Melrose Ave. The event is free, but because there is limited seating those attending are asked to RSVP online.

Parking is available at the PDC for $10. Free parking, with a ticket validated at the event, is available in the structure at 625 N. San Vicente Blvd.

Bravo! This is one of the best documentaries of last year. Not at all what I expected. I don’t hold Bill Clinton in high regard, he’s a very persuasive man, but so is joe osteen. The facts and figures of this film, which you can google easily and see them true is America’s ugly not so secret. Our system is racist. Bases on self perpetuating statistics. More blacks are arrested for crime they must commit most of the crime. 120,000 is a figure several organizations agree are prisoners falsely incarcerated. Locking people up is good business. Go see this on… Read more »

How rich that the City of West Hollywood, a City supposedly known for it’s “tolerance”, is hosting an event that involves the RACIST group Black Lives Matter. Dr. Melina Abdullah has openly called for the abolition of Cops as well as racist quotes against White people. For anyone else who is unfamilliar with Black Lives Matter, here is a link to the “10 Demands for White People”. https://www.leoweekly.com/2017/08/white-people/
