West Hollywood City Councilmember John D’Amico will host a community forum on Sept. 14 to discuss pedestrian, bicycle and vehicle safety on Fountain Avenue on the city’s Eastside.

The Thursday forum is an apparent response to community reaction to the death of a pedestrian who was hit by a car on Sept. 1 while crossing Fountain near Formosa on his way to work. Enrique Lopez was hit while on his way to work from his apartment on Formosa, which he shared with his wife and two sons.

The forum will take place from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Plummer Park’s Fiesta Hall, located at 7377 Santa Monica Blvd.

Those attending will include representatives from the West Hollywood Sheriff’s Station, staff members from the city’s Public Safety Department and Long Range and Mobility Planning Division and members of the City’s Public Safety Commission and Transportation Commission.

The forum’s mission is to engage community members in a discussion about recent accidents on Fountain Avenue and about ongoing efforts to study and implement bicycle and pedestrian safety improvements. There will be opportunities for community input regarding short- and long-term solutions for safety improvements on Fountain Avenue.
.
The community forum is free and open to the public. No RSVP is required. Limited parking is available in the lot at the north end of Plummer Park on Fountain Avenue.

For more information, contact D’Amico’s office at (323) 848-6460.

I’m certainly not trying to blame the victim (poor gentleman who was killed), but it would be interesting to know how it happened.

mick, completely agree with you. there is absolutely no police presence on fountain and cars speed through any section of open road. there needs to be a message sent to drivers that the speed limit is being enforced. anyone walking along fountain is putting their life at risk even on the non-accessible skinny sidewalks, let alone trying to cross the street! WeHo is supposed to be a pedestrian friendly city, but there’s little evidence of that north of santa monica blvd. everyone needs to respect one another whether it’s walkers, cyclists, or drivers. speed kills.

From Wikipedia:

In Los Angeles, Fountain Avenue is a minor east-west street, between and parallel to Sunset Boulevard and Santa Monica Boulevard, two very congested arteries. Therefore, when Johnny Carson asked Bette Davis for advice on “the best way an aspiring starlet could get into Hollywood,” Ms. Davis replied without hesitation, “Take Fountain!”

After this meeting, Bette’s advice may no longer be valid.

I hope that the Sheriff’s Dept. can set up regular radar to catch all the speeders who are traveling over the speed limit. The speeding never stops. It is happening 365 days /year
