A recent story in the Washington Post illustrates a generational divide in West Hollywood’s Russian-speaking community when it comes to Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin.

“In this city of trendy clubs and restaurants known primarily for its gay community, an enclave of older Russian immigrants — largely supporters of President Trump — say the accusations of collusion between the president and Russia have no merit and remind them of the political corruption of their homeland,” the Post reports. “But among younger Russians, Trump is a stain on their American Dream, a replica of the authoritarian persona they detest in Russian President Vladimir Putin.”

For example, the Post reports that Anastasia Kurteeva, 33, is worried that a new Cold War may be coming and is openly critical of Putin. Kurteeva, a lesbian, also is critical of Trump, saying she’s concerned about his stand on gay issues. However her girlfriend, Maria Shtabskaya, a financial advisor at Morgan Stanley Wealth Management branch in Beverly Hills, is reluctant to criticize Russia.

Raisa Aguf, a senior who is a longtime member of WeHo’s Russian Advisory Board, says she’s not sure what to believe when she sees news about Russia’s alleged involvement in U.S. elections in support of Trump. Nevertheless, she voted for Trump and believes he will succeed if people let him.

The much younger Farhad Yusupov, 48 and the current chairman of the Russian Advisory Board, calls Trump “a puppet” and says he is certain that Russia interfered with the U.S. election.

I don’t think trump actually was involved with collusion with Russia. However, an insane need by Trump to build in Moscow, caused him to act in a way (and still does) that regardless of intent (like Trump wanting big profits from Russia with no knowledge of History or what our current issues with Russian Policy: Syria, ISIS, Human Rights especially for Russia’s current LQBT born Russian people. But Russia is exploiting Trump’s Ignorance and Lack of ANY care for anyone not helping him get richer (or rumors he need bailout money from Russia.

I often talk to many of the Russians and Ukrainians in the area, I wouldn’t be surprised if a majority of the older generation supports Trump (though many don’t vote). Many have openly expressed a strong distrust of arabic, muslim and also black people and identify with Trump’s xenophobia and racism. I’ve heard the same from elderly German jewish immigrants. I know that WeHo had only about 10% vote for Trump but the support of the older generation of eastern european immigrants is probably much higher. If the US became a de facto dictatorship like Russia, my sense is that… Read more »
