Many people, especially in the LGBT community, sometimes have trouble making gender assumptions about others. In this video we have the always stunning Courtney Act from MTV International talking Gender Terminology 101. First Courtney explains the difference between gender Identity and gender expression. Gender identity is how you feel inside and gender expression is how to choose to express yourself to the world. And your sex is what is in between your legs, although Courtney explains how that is too basic a definition. Typically, your sex is determined at birth when the doctor pulls you out of the womb and sees if you have a penis or a vagina. But there are times when intersex organs or chromosomes are a factor.
Courtney then explains some terms like cisgender, transgender, intersex and gender fluid to an individual might identify with each one. Ultimately, just remember to be respectful of others, even if you don’t understand how someone identifies. You might just learn something. WATCH
