The grant will directly fund 100 units of senior housing, developed by the LGBT Center. The approved motion fills a key funding gap, allowing the project to move forward.
The campus, designed by Leong Leong—recently honored by the Architectural League of New York as one of this year’s “emerging voices” architectural firms—and brought to fruition by executive architects Killefer Flammang is scheduled to be completed in early 2019 as the center marks its 50th anniversary.
Other funding includes $7 million from philanthropist Anita May Rosenstein through the Anita May Rosenstein Foundation, Wilbur D. May Foundation, and the Anita and Arnold Rosenstein Family Foundation.
“Today, we’ve crossed a major threshold making this affordable housing project a reality,” said 4th District L.A. Councilmember David Ryu. “Los Angeles is facing an unprecedented housing and homelessness crisis. I’m proud to see City Council invest this money in a solution – and bring this project that much closer to providing homes and changing lives.”
The Anita May Rosenstein Campus broke ground in March of this year after a successful fundraising campaign by the LGBT Center. On Nov. 9, City Council approved Councilmember Ryu’s motion to allocate $8.75 million for 26 units of supportive youth housing, made possible by Measure HHH.
“We are enormously grateful to Councilmember David Ryu for his leadership in making this grant possible, and to the entire City Council and Mayor Eric Garcetti for their commitment to supporting affordable housing for LGBT seniors at risk of homelessness,” said Lorri Jean, CEO of the Los Angeles LGBT Center.
The $4.9 million designated today was re-programmed from the City of Los Angeles’ annual CDBG Funds and will be apportioned by the City’s Housing and Community Investment Department. This inter-generational campus will also include 100 beds for homeless youth, ground floor retail space, ample parking and a commercial kitchen.
