The last day of Passover, which is the traditional day of Yizkor, (Memorial for the Deceased,) will focus on Holocaust Remembrance, with a special presentation by Bob Rich of the American Red Cross at Hollywood Temple Beth El, in conjunction with the Iranian American Jewish Federation.

The memorial will be held on Saturday at noon. Regular Sabbath and Passover worship begins at 9:45 am.

This archival photo from a report by Nazi commander Jurgen Stroop, who was in charge of German forces trying to put down the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, shows three women freedom fighters.

This Passover marks the 75th year of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, which started at this season in 1943. It was a desperate attempt by the remaining Jews of the Ghetto to show the world that the Nazis could be held at bay on their own grounds. Armed with old rifles, hand-grenades and Molotov cocktails, they held off trained soldiers armed with high-powered machine guns, flame throwers and heavy artillery, and showed the world that Jews would no longer be pitiable victims, but active fighters in the war against Nazism.

Rich explains the significance of the unique service the Red Cross offers to survivors of the Holocaust. “We help clients who had direct contact with relatives or friends who went missing during the Holocaust, and our services are made available only if our clients still don’t know to this day what happened to these missing loved ones,” he says. More information on the Red Cross location service is available online.

Hollywood Temple Beth El has been the spiritual home to numerous survivors of the Holocaust who till today do not know the fate of many family and friends, murdered by the Nazis and their allies. Till today, this is a painful topic for survivors, who must also deal with denials of responsibility or involvement by government leaders of countries in which the mass killings took place. Jews, not only in Europe, but in North Africa and the Middle East as well, were targeted for killing by the Nazis and their allies during World War II.

Hollywood Temple Beth El is located at 1317 N. Crescent Heights Blvd.
