I was so excited to see the 7th collection from Marco Marco premier this last week at the 2018 New York Fashion Week. This was no ordinary runway show by any standard. It was boundary breaking because all 34 models identify as transgender.
It’s not uncommon for trans models working in fashion to not disclose their gender identity, nor should they have to. But this is the first time that a major exhibit on the main fashion week circuit featured no openly cisgender models.
“I wanted to create a space to celebrate trans bodies,” designer Marco Morante told Mic. “This was an opportunity for their presence to be undeniable and reinforce that trans is beautiful.”
Aside from the impact this had for the transgender community in its celebration of transgender identity, it was also a stunning procession of art, design and creativity.
