The West Hollywood City Council on Monday will consider adopting a resolution calling for a boycott of the Beverly Hills Hotel and the Bel-Air Hotel and stating its opposition to anti-abortion and anti-homosexual elements of the penal code of Brunei.
The resolution, proposed by City Council members John Heilman and Lindsey Horvath, follows the implementation on April 3 of elements of Brunei’s Sharia law that call for the death of people engaged in gay sex and severe physical punishment of women who have sex outside of marriage, among other things. The Dorchester Collection, whose luxury hotel collection includes the Beverly Hills and Bel Air hotels, is owned by the Brunei Investment Agency. The agency is under the control of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, the absolute ruler of Brunei.
This latest implementation of elements of Sharia law has resulted in boycotts of the two hotels in Beverly Hills and Los Angeles by major celebrities and non-profit organizations that typically stage fund-raising events there.
Actor George Clooney, in a recent column for Deadline, said: “They’re nice hotels. The people who work there are kind and helpful and have no part in the ownership of these properties. But let’s be clear, every single time we stay at or take meetings at or dine at any of these nine hotels we are putting money directly into the pockets of men who choose to stone and whip to death their own citizens for being gay or accused of adultery.”
The Los Angeles City Council on Tuesday adopted its own resolution calling for the boycott of Hotel Bel-Air and the Beverly Hills Hotel.
The West Hollywood City Council–always making the tough decisions. The Sultan is probably cowering in a corner of his Throne Room at the thought of this action.
It’s amazing these ego maniacal members of the WEHO City Council believe anyone is going to boycott these hotels because some politician says to do it.
They should start focusing on the fact that a NB & SB left turn signal should be placed at Fountain and Crescent Heights.
No one really cares about their tree hugging grandstanding.
While we are at it, they should also focus on putting a left turn signal at SMB and Crescent Heights!
West Hollywood City Council needs to devote its attention to local, quality-of-life issues. Why is it that I cannot walk on Larrabee Street without stepping in the irresponsibility of dog owners?
Headline is wrong. Hotel Bel-Air is in Los Angeles, not Beverly Hills
