Log Cabin Republicans’ Latest Mixer at Fiesta Cantina Draws Criticism

The former U.S. Speaker of the House Tip O’Neill famously said: “all politics is local.” If there’s any doubt about that, consider the declaration in 2016 by former Mayor Lindsey Horvath (now a Council member) that Donald Trump was not welcome in West Hollywood.  And now there’s a minor storm over the fact that the Los Angeles Chapter of Log Cabin Republicans is having an event at Fiesta Cantina, which is on Santa Monica Boulevard east of San Vicente in the heart of the city’s Boystown nightlife area.

The event is scheduled for May 24, with details on the group’s website.  It will feature an appearance by Sabo,  the street artist who in 2017 bragged that he had defaced signs for the City of West Hollywood’s WeHo Pedals bike share program with promotions of a new book by controversial right-wing propagandist Milo Yiannopoulos.   On his website, he brags that his mission is “creatively kicking liberals in the teeth.”

While some gay men have taken to social media to condemn Fiesta Cantina for allowing Log Cabin Republicans there, it is unclear why given that this isn’t the first time the group has gathered on the rooftop of the restaurant and bar. Fiesta Cantina’s rooftop has been the home to a number of Log Cabin’s monthly mixers over the years, including its 2016 election victory party, celebrating the election of Donald Trump, who the group endorsed. The group also has staged events at V Wine Room, which is located at 903 Westbourne Drive, as well as Lisa Vanderpump’s Sur Lounge and The Abbey in past years.

A spokesman for Fiesta Cantina told WEHOville “We don’t take a political stance. We want to practice exclusivity for everyone in the LGBT community, and that would include the Log Cabin Republicans.  This isn’t about Donald Trump. It’s an event for the Log Cabin Republicans.”

The Log Cabin group says that it “works to build a stronger, more inclusive Republican Party by promoting the core values of limited government, individual liberty, personal responsibility, free markets, and a strong national defense while advocating for the freedom and equality of LGBT Americans.

The group’s board of directors includes Ben Coleman, former Public Safety Commissioner for the City of West Hollywood.   “Ben’s conservative and Christian upbringing, his extensive experience as a principal in a local Sacramento dry cleaning chain, plus the time he has spent living in the big cities of San Diego and Los Angeles, have shaped his political views today,” says his profile on the group’s website. “Ben considers himself to be a true small government, states rights, Constitutional conservative. He joined the Log Cabin Republicans of Los Angeles as a board member at large in 2013 and was elected as vice president in 2015.”

WEHOville has reached out to the Log Cabin Republicans of Los Angeles for its response to the criticism.  As of publication it has responded.  Tickets to the May 24 event are $15 for non-members and $10 for members and can be purchased online.

It’s now Saturday morning May 25th and I’m ready to go to sleep after the republican hate group “unite the right rally” in WeHo that was going to happen on the 24th just fizzled out, leaving me with nothing to counter protest! 🤣

Liar.

The Log Cabin Republican meeting last night was one of the biggest ever. I didn’t see any protesters. I did hear the WehoVille reporter who was recording apologizing for the gay mafia being authoritarian. I came looking for the video. Sabo was a gas.

To be “one of the biggest ever” republican events in West Hollywood would require only 3 people! 🤣

Trump told Fox News’ “The Next Revolution with Steve Hilton” in an interview aired Sunday that, “I think it’s absolutely fine” that Buttigieg and his husband, Chasten, are open about their relationship on the campaign trail.

Trump agreed with Hilton that Buttigieg’s candidacy is a sign of progress for the country. “I think that’s something that perhaps some people will have a problem with,” Trump said.

“I have no problem with it whatsoever. I think it’s good.”

Barring transgender individuals from serving in the military was done because most of them immediately demanded that the military pay for their sexual reassignment surgeries. So they weren’t there to serve their country; they were there to get a “freebie” paid for by you and me.

You may be right about that, Cy, because when the agenda with transgender enlistees was becoming clear they put a stop to it. The Washington Post is hardly an unbiased source, by the way. The last I heard they were still promoting that lie about Charlottesville.

I cited the Washington Post in-spite of its conservative bias because it cited verifiable sources to back their position, something your are yet to do! What lie about Charlottesville? The Unite the Right rally was an overt white supremacist rally that assaulted several people and even killed a few, the video evidence is abundant. The only sources that deny this tend to have holocaust and racism denial on their home pages.

To say that the Washington Post has a conservative bias is laughable! Trump’s “very fine people on both sides” comment in Charlottesville was about the disagreement with regards to statues and monuments, and it could not have been more clear. Those media who said he was speaking of Neo-Nazis and White Supremacists continued to do so because they know that if they tell the same lie over and over again that lie will be cemented as truth in the general public. Trump, in fact, condemned the White Supremacists and Neo-Nazis. It’s all right there if you bother to find it.… Read more »

The source you cited is Right-Center biased based on source selection that leans right and Mixed for factual reporting due to use of multiple sources who have failed fact checks, they frequently cite tabloids with no credibility as sources. What you are citing with Trump is his back peddling after the fact!
Trump’s new defense of his Charlottesville comments is incredibly false!
The 2017 “Unite the Right” rally was organized by and intended for white supremacists and white nationalists.

Dumping on Trump is almost a requirement if you’re going to get along in W. Hollywood, but I’m still waiting to hear criticisms of him that have any substance. As I write this there are 31 comments with most of them saying some pretty unkind things about the President, but none of them sound as if they come from a person who wants to hear or read anything other than from really radical sources. I follow the news pretty closely from a number of different sources and I don’t know of a single racist, sexist, homophobic, or in any way… Read more »

Several credible sources of Trump’s rhetoric fueling sexism, racism, anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, homophobia, and transphobia. Or read ARTICLES in the WEHOville, not just comments!

I’m at least as well read as you, Cy. Accusations are made in all the media without backing them up. Or, as in the Charlottesville case, a blatant lie was told and is repeated over and over again, completely ignoring the many corrections.

Cy, you “cherry pick” a LOT when you present your case on issues! I absolutely do not support white nationalists and I’ve said nothing that should lead you to believe I did. I agree with Trump that they should be condemned, which is what he said in Charlottesville. Trump was referencing “good people on both sides” of the issue of statues and monuments.

I think you owe me an apology.

The Log Cabin Republicans are doing a really lousy job of “advocating for the freedom and equality of LGBTQ Americans.” But what should we expect from a group that represents itself with a 19th century symbol?

This isn’t just about Trump. Most REPUBLICANS are anti-LGBTQ. Simple. When Trump picks a HUGE homophobe for Vice President that’s a clue he’s not on your side. Why you support that? It’s like a jew supporting hitler? They seem to forget all the people who have fought for the rights to even go in these bars openly. The thousands who died as a result of homophobic republicans, the hat that’s created by treating LGBTQ like we’re some freaks. That hate trickles down to ignorant people committing hate crimes. Shame on all the bars that allow them to gather. There’s tons… Read more »

Hitler killed Jews. Millions of them. Not a good comparison at all. Let’s stop being soooo emotional. Both parties are flawed. I’m pro-choice and believe in VERY strong gun control (I’d be okay with total abolishment). There’s only two choices. I look at both parties, and have to pick the better of two evils. Democrats want to steal my money, then try and find ways to steal more of it. Where does it go? I have no clue. I have to take a step back and choose the better of two evils – and for me, that’s the Republican party.… Read more »

Because not all of us feel the need to dress half-naked walking around in pink pussy hats leading other half-naked men around by a leash! Not all of us are into looking like a fool! The LGBT community doesn’t accept us all! Being gay doesn’t get you the mileage it used to but if we were transgender we’d be golden…a quote right from Modern Family which is exactly how a lot of us feel. The left is defenders of women my ass. Not biologicial women. Tell me how it’s fair biological women now have to compete against men who have… Read more »

In my youth, I was once a Gay Republican. Then, I saw the error of my ways and became a Democrat. Trump is nothing more than a crook who became President due to the incompetent campaign run by Hillary Clinton. He is, moreover, an idiot a-hole who happens to have the support of right-wing extremists who see him as a way to: End Roe vs Wade; Enact extreme anti-immigration laws. Scale back environmental protection regulations and consumer protection laws. Oh, and do away with LGBT etc anti-discrimination laws. So, Fiesta Cantina should really think hard about allowing Log Cabin Republicans… Read more »

The simple point is fiesta cantina and the log cabin Republicans can do whatever they want. This is America. By the same token, now that I am aware of their business practices, I can make sure that myself or any of my friends never spend another dollar at their business. I hope anyone with a social conscience would do the same. #boycott

I agree John, but I never fancied the spot anyway! Some of the ensuing commentary make me regret my initial post of support, especially those commentaries, cloaked in secrecy and weakness-of-conviction anonymity, which celebrate the short-term benefits of borrowed-money tax cuts, over the long-term health of humanity. Call me a dreamer.
