If you are 50 or older and trying to understand what’s going on in the world (and city) we now live it, consider signing up for the “Political Science–Current Events” course that will be produced by the Santa Monica College Emeritus Program (SMC-Emeritus) in West Hollywood.
The course is an initiative of the city’s Aging in Place / Aging in Community program in partnership with the West Hollywood Community Housing Corporation (WHCHC) and will be offered free-of-charge to community members who are 50 and older as part of a goal to promote opportunities for lifelong learning.
An Emeritus Information Session will take place on Oct. 28 at 2 p.m. to introduce SMC-Emeritus to West Hollywood community members. The session will take place at the WHCHC’s Movietown Square Community Room, located at 7302 Santa Monica Blvd.
It will include a meet-and-greet with the Emeritus Associate Dean Scott Silverman and Political Science Professor Brandon Millan. Attendees will have opportunities to complete the SMC-Emeritus enrollment process and register early for the winter session, which will begin in January 2020 in the Movietown Square Community Room turned classroom.
“Political Science–Current Events” is aimed at increasing students’ understanding of local, national, and international current affairs. Students in the course consider the political, economic, and social movements that determine domestic and foreign policies in the United States and around the world. Instruction will be provided in English. Future course opportunities may be provided in additional languages, such as Russian. The SMC-Emeritus in West Hollywood.

I’ll save everyone the time. Politics today, according to all media sources: Republicans = Bad scary racists ; Trump = Evil orange man ; Democrats = Saints ; Ed Buck = No-one-keep-drinking-our-Kool-Aide-gay-boys. Facts don’t matter to liberals and don’t dare mention to them how Trump was an LGBT ally all of his life, even paying Ryan White’s medical bills. California media and CA Dems have killed this state and don’t want to be held accountable for it.
Watch what Gov. Gavin Newsom does in California because in 2024, when he is the Dem Presidential nominee, he will want to do the same thing nationally.
It’s a great idea to provide a course like this but I do wonder how balanced it will be.
Why offer free education courses ONLY to people 50 and older? It is ageist for no discernible reason. Young people are struggling with high rents, huge education costs, low wages, and staggering health care costs — which are, as a whole, less of an issue for earlier generations. Meanwhile, 80% of wealth is in the hands of the older generation. Providing services to the older generation is important, but having a benefit that ONLY accrues to those 50+ (some of which are making vastly more than young people, with fewer expenses due to rent control and Medicare, etc), seems unequal… Read more »
