The most expensive gym in West Hollywood? The answer to that question used to be Equinox, which charges an initiation fee of $200 to $300 and then $300 a month for membership. But then along came Dogpound, the celebrity fitness center that opened in May on Robertson Boulevard. No membership required there, but a 60-minute workout with a trainer costs $200, or a total of $2,280 if you go for 12 sessions in a month. There’s a decent chance you’ll see Justin Bieber pumping weights nearby.
And now there’s Monarch Athletic Club, which is opening Dec. 12 at 8730 Sunset Blvd. The cost of a membership there ranges from $1,250 to $2,000 a month, with the basics including unlimited personal training, quarterly evaluations, nutritional advice, and access to the club’s amenities, including Monarch’s social club. The pricier membership offers services such as metabolic panel testing, 30- to 60-minute sports massages, ongoing physical therapy sessions, IV therapy and injections, anti-aging treatments and a “concierge doctor” that can be booked same-day, for house, office, hotel, or work calls.
Monarch Athletic Club says on its website that “to even call it a fitness brand is a gross understatement; instead, the club serves as a hub for personal growth and optimization.”
Another attribute that Monarch calls out is the fact that it is “Private & Exclusive. Monarch is only available to members and not to the general public. Like-minded members will be able to work towards their fitness and health goals without distraction.”
Dr. Ryan Greene is the CEO of Monarch Athletic Club and serves as the principal medical advisor. He is an osteopathic physician specializing in human performance, sports medicine and nutrition as well as cosmetic dermatology.
People do this for like 10 years in LA and end up owning absolutely nothing

F- that! As a certified fitness trainer who has worked with “celebs” for 20 years, I can tell you that if you are paying that kind of money for your gym or trainer, forget about your body, have your head examined. You need a check up from the neck up. Many of my Clients had no idea what they were paying, they had a manager who wrote the checks, but no trainer or gym is worth that kind of money. Exercise is exercise, your body does not know the difference between the YMCA and Equinox. Plus, most people who can… Read more »
I was a member of Sports Club LA (now Equinox) in West LA for years. The dues were expensive but I never had to deal with poor gym etiquette, everyone re-racked their weights, no one tied up a work station unreasonably long, and there was general courtesy and consideration towards everyone. Any breakdown of that was immediately confronted and corrected by staff. Yes, there were wealthy, high-achieving and celebrity members there, but they knew how to behave. It was worth it to pay more than at other gyms because every time I went it was an all-around good experience. Contrast… Read more »
For me, going to the gym is to work out. I am in and out in 30 minutes. It’s not a social event. I was a member of Equinox for years until I learned about the owners. What I saw there were people planting themselves on machines and texting, not too many people exercising. I just want a workout. I don’t need an expensive gym so I can tell people that I am a member. I have a professional treadmill at home. I go to the gym just for weight training. I don’t even go in the locker room. These… Read more »
Is this an article or an advertisement?
This is information I want, so it is news. Businesses are featured here and in other publications all the time. I have a feeling you would have taken no notice of Monarch if it had not been high-end, which is reverse snobbery.
How is this a whole story to publish?
Will we get such an opus next month about the cost of 24 hour fitness & how the charge the big fancy new gym schedule to our small, odd shape and size (as the first big gym try in the late 70s or so.
We know Equinox is expensive and owner is a Trump supporter.
NO POSTINGS WILL CHANGE EITHER SIDE. DEMS WON’T GO, AND TRUMPERS WILL STILL GO.
Well if you can afford it by all means . I mean afterall a gym is a gym is a gym. I guess I’d rather be more constructive with my pennies from heaven.
Outside is the best gym. Why go inside ? Keep it simple. Save your coins
