The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health today confirmed 138 new cases of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) infection, bring the total to 799. There was no increase in the number of cases in West Hollywood, which remained at 31. That means one of each 1,189 WeHo residents is confirmed to be infected.
The Health Department reported three new deaths, with each of those who died being over the age of 65 and having an underlying health condition. That brings the total number of deaths to 12.
Brentwood, which yesterday had tied with West Hollywood in having the largest number of confirmed cases in L.A. County, today jumped ahead with 34. There also were changes in the count in cities and neighborhoods near West Hollywood. The number of infections in Beverly Hills rose from 12 to 13 as of noon today. Culver City’s infection count was reduced from seven yesterday to six today (Such changes happen for various reasons, including misidentification of where an infected person lives and a misdiagnosis.) Infections in Hollywood grew from 19 confirmed on Tuesday to 23 today. The Melrose neighborhood continued to have a large increase, with the 26 infections reported on Tuesday growing to 33 today.
The department today issued a new order that individuals who test positive for COVID-19, and those who are told by a clinician they are presumed to be positive for COVID-19 must self-isolate for seven days and then an addition three days after being symptom-free. Those who have been in close contact with someone who is positive or presumed positive must quarantine themselves for 14 days from their last exposure to that person.
The Health Department says that those who feel ill but haven’t been diagnosed should “stay home for at least seven days or until 72 hours after being fever free, whichever is longer. Call your doctor if you are concerned and/or your symptoms worsen. Individuals who are elderly, have underlying health conditions or pregnant should consider contacting their providers earlier when they are sick.”
The Health Department reiterated that people should practice social distancing because when someone with COVID-19 coughs or sneezes the small droplets from their nose or mouth can travel three to six feet. People can get infected if they breathe in these droplets, or the droplets land on their eyes, nose, or mouth. Although people who are sick with COVID-19 are the most infectious, it is possible that some people may spread the virus before they start to feel unwell.
It is also possible that a person can get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching his or her own mouth, nose, or eyes, but this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads.
