The L.A. County Department of Public Health today announced that it is extending the “stay at home” order, which was set to expire on April 19, through May 15.
The extension was announced today by Dr. Barbara Ferrer, the Health Department director. Ferrer that as of today, where have been 8,430 confirmed cases of COVID-19 infection in Los Angeles County. That is an increase of 6% from the 7,955 confirmed as of Thursday. The number of confirmed cases in West Hollywood has not increased from the 101 confirmed on Thursday.
The department has confirmed 18 new COVID-19 deaths, bringing the total to 241. Ten people who died were over the age of 65; seven people between the ages of 41 to 65 years old and one person between the ages of 18 to 40 years old, the Health Department reports.
The extension of the stay at home order requires the closure of “non-essential” businesses such as restaurants, bars, gyms, movie theatres and most retailers. It also asks that people stay at home unless they are doing essential task such as picking up groceries or medicine. And now those who are out in public are asked to wear a cloth face covering if they are going to essential businesses. Those working in businesses that have been allowed to stay open such as grocery stores and pharmacies must also wear cloth face coverings.
Ferrer said health officials are seeing a “flattening of the curve” of infections. That means that the number of infections is growing more slowly, which reduces the possibility that hospitals will not have the capacity to treat those who become seriously ill. However, she said the “stay at home” order had to be extended because there are so many in Los Angeles County who are infected, many of whom are not yet aware of that.
The confirmed infections in Beverly Hills remains at 71. Culver City today had one new confirmed infection, bringing the total to 31. Hollywood had one new infection, bringing the total to 110. The Melrose neighborhood’s count is 192, up from 184 on Thursday.
The Little Armenia neighborhood in Los Angeles continues to have the highest number of infections per resident, with 29 confirmed as of noon today. That equals 361.37 per 100,000 people. The Crestview neighborhood in Los Angeles has 35 infections, which is 307.88 per 100,000 people. In numbers of infections, West Hollywood continues to rank third among the 335 cities and neighborhoods in Los Angeles. Its 101 infections equal 273.33 infections per 100,000 residents.
The Health Department now has 21 drive-up testing sites, with one scheduled to open in West Hollywood on Monday. People who want to get tested can apply testing online and must have symptoms of the infection. Those symptoms include coughing, a fever, tiredness and, in severe cases, difficulty breathing.
The Health Department continues to remind people that the important steps one can take to protect yourself from the virus are to wash your hands frequently, avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands, avoid being around sick people, practice physical distancing, especially by staying at home and wearing a face covering when out buying groceries or medicine or providing essential services.
The Health Department also reminds people: If you are mildly sick, stay home for at least seven days and until 72 hours after being fever and symptom free. Call your doctor if you are concerned and/or your symptoms worsen. Individuals who are elderly, have underlying health conditions or pregnant should consider contacting their providers earlier when they are sick.
