Sunday’s Count Shows No Increase in Confirmed COVID-19 Infections in WeHo

The number of West Hollywood residents confirmed to have been infected with the COVID19 virus remains at 102 today according to a report from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health. That means one of every 361 residents has been confirmed to be infected with COVID-19.

While it is too early to predict how many West Hollywood residents ultimately will be infected, in recent days the number of confirmed infections seems to be leveling out, with 96 cases on April 7 growing to 101 on April 9.

The Health Department said that as of noon today it has identified 9,192 positive cases of COVID-19 across all areas of LA County, an increase of 3.6 % from the 8,873 confirmed infections on Saturday. There has been a total of 296 deaths, up from 265 as of Saturday.

In its announcement of the latest number of infections, the Health Department said that “83% of people who died had underlying health conditions. Of those who died, information about race and ethnicity is available for 240 people (85% of the cases); 33% of deaths occurred among Latinx residents, 32% among White residents, 19% among Asian residents, 14% among African American residents, and 2% among residents identifying with other races. Upon further investigation, four cases reported earlier were not L.A. County residents. As of today, 2,246 people who tested positive for COVID-19 (24% of positive cases) have been hospitalized at some point during their illness.

“Testing capacity continues to increase in LA County, with testing results available for over 47,000 individuals and 14% of people testing positive.”

West Hollywood-adjacent testing center

The Health Department on Monday will open a drive-up testing site at 8730 Alden Drive in Los Angeles, which is on the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center campus adjacent to West Hollywood.  Previously the closest testing location was at the Veterans Administration Hospital parking lot on Constitution Avenue, six miles west of West Hollywood.

Those who want to be tested must first go online to see if they qualify and to book an appointment. Testing is limited to those who have symptoms of an infection, which include coughing, a fever, tiredness and, in severe cases, difficulty breathing.  Same day or next-day testing is available only for those who are over 65 and/or have underlying healthcare conditions.  Priority also is given to first responders, critical government workers, or health care professionals. Those individuals should inquire at their affiliated hospital, medical center or department for information about how to schedule a same or next day appointment for testing.

There were 74 number of confirmed infections in Beverly Hills an increase from 73 reported on Saturday. Culver City continued to see no increase in its 31 confirmed infections.  Hollywood had one new infection, bringing the total to 115.  There were 199 infections in the Melrose neighborhood, up from 194 on Saturday. With 35 infections as of today, the Little Armenia neighborhood in Los Angeles had 436.14 infections per 100,000 residents, the highest rate of any of the 335 cities and communities in Los Angeles County. With 42 confirmed infections, the Crestview neighborhood had the second-highest rate, with 369.46 infections per 100,000 residents. Using that metric, West Hollywood had the third-highest rate, with 276.04 confirmed infections per 100,000 residents.

The Health Department’s “stay at home” order, now extended through May 15, requires the closure of all non-essential businesses.  Exempt are grocery stores, pharmacies, hardware stores, medical marijuana dealers and a few others. The stay at home order is an effort to keep people who may be infected with the COVID-19 virus from interacting with others and infecting that.  To implement that order grocery stores and other essential businesses are requiring their employees to wear cloth face covering to protect them from inhaling invisible droplets containing the virus, which can be transmitted by sneezing, coughing or talking.

The Health Department continues to remind people that the important steps one can take to protect yourself from the virus are to wash your hands frequently, avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands, avoid being around sick people, practice physical distancing, especially by staying at home and wearing a face covering when out buying groceries or medicine or providing essential services.

The Health Department also reminds people: If you are mildly sick, stay home for at least seven days and until 72 hours after being fever and symptom free. Call your doctor if you are concerned and/or your symptoms worsen. Individuals who are elderly, have underlying health conditions or pregnant should consider contacting their providers earlier when they are sick.
