With no new infections reported as of noon today, the number of West Hollywood residents diagnosed with COVID-19 remains steady at 102, the same count since Saturday.
The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health reports that there have been 239 new confirmed COVID-19 infections countywide, bringing the total to 9,420 cases. That is the smallest increases in cases since March 26. As of today there have been 25 additional deaths, bringing that to a total of 320. “Eleven people who died were over the age of 65 and 12 people who died were between the ages of 41 to 65 years old,” the Health Department reported. “Twenty-two people had underlying health conditions; one person between the ages of 41 to 65 had no reported underlying health conditions.”
The county has steadily increased the number of sites where people can get tested for the virus. As of noon today, 52,000 individuals have been tested, with 13% of them testing positive for the virus. A testing site adjacent to West Hollywood opened today on Alden Drive at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
Those who want to be tested must first go online to see if they qualify and to book an appointment. Testing is limited to those who have symptoms of an infection, which include coughing, a fever, tiredness and, in severe cases, difficulty breathing. Same day or next-day testing is available only for those who are over 65 and/or have underlying healthcare conditions. Priority also is given to first responders, critical government workers, or health care professionals. Those individuals should inquire at their affiliated hospital, medical center or department for information about how to schedule a same or next day appointment for testing.
The Health Department confirmed that three people that died from COVID-19 worked in a healthcare setting and 787 confirmed cases of COVID-19 have occurred among healthcare workers. “One-third of these cases are among nurses and 9% among physicians. About 60% of these cases do not know or did not report how they were exposed. However, 24% of workers in these categories reported that they were exposed to COVID-19 through contact with a patient or another healthcare worker. Healthcare workers who are positive worked at 22 different settings across the county; 43% worked in hospitals, 19% worked in skilled nursing or assisted living facilities and 12% worked in outpatient settings.”
The number of confirmed infections in Beverly Hills remained steady at 74. Culver City saw an increase of one confirmed infection, bringing its total to 32. Hollywood had two new infections, bringing the total to 117. There was one newly confirmed infection in the Melrose neighborhood, bringing its total to 200.
The Little Armenia neighborhood in Los Angeles, which in recent days has had the largest number of infections per number of residents, saw an increase from 35 reported yesterday to 41 today. Little Armenia now has 510.9 per 100,000 residents. The area with the second largest number of infections per capita remains the Crestview neighborhood, where the number of confirmed infections now is 43, an increase of one from yesterday’s 42. The Crestview neighborhood has 378.25 infections per 100,000 residents. West Hollywood continues to have the third-highest rate, with 276.04 confirmed infections per 100,000 residents.
The Health Department has asked that employees of businesses that are allowed to remain open because they provide essential services (grocery stores, pharmacies, etc.) provide cloth face coverings for those employees and that customers also wear them to reduce the possibility of transmitting the virus. However, as of midnight on Wednesday, April 15, that request is mandatory for both businesses and their customers. The businesses most post physical distancing plans, alerting customers that they must stand at least six feet apart while waiting in checkout lines.
The Health Department’s “stay at home” order, now extended through May 15, requires the closure of all non-essential businesses. Exempt are grocery stores, pharmacies, hardware stores, medical marijuana dealers and a few others. The stay at home order is an effort to keep people who may be infected with the COVID-19 virus from interacting with others and infecting that.
The Health Department continues to remind people that the important steps one can take to protect yourself from the virus are to wash your hands frequently, avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands, avoid being around sick people, practice physical distancing, especially by staying at home and wearing a face covering when out buying groceries or medicine or providing essential services.
The Health Department also reminds people: If you are mildly sick, stay home for at least seven days and until 72 hours after being fever and symptom free. Call your doctor if you are concerned and/or your symptoms worsen. Individuals who are elderly, have underlying health conditions or pregnant should consider contacting their providers earlier when they are sick.
